Are you talking XN vs GF control cocks?

Thanks for all your comments folks. What age do we think? The fount is lacquered brass and the reflector has the oval Tilley badge as you can see in the first photo.
It’s a bit rough and there’s a split in the reflector, on the plus side it’s totally unfaffed with.

I’d like to know which is the correct control cock, any advice would be most welcome!

If that is the correct burner, you have got the correct control cock. If it were the longer control cock, the hole into which it screws would be much deeper than needed for the GF control cock:

    8 Tilley control cocks

    Cheers

Thanks for the information. I’ll have a good look at it over the weekend. I think I might have a GN cock somewhere..

A “GN” control cock would be most unusual.

That tank will restore well and Tilley bowl fires were fitted with the 169 vapouriser, in my opinion, a previous owner has replaced the original control cock and burner and vapouriser with what was available at the time.

The base plate of the tank may be painted black.

You’re on the money Jeff, the base is painted black and I too think it’s been maintained with available parts.

    Great stuff Stevie

Very common for them to split in that area.... :/

I have seen something similar somewhere to that lower knurled nut on the reflector?...:-k

Similar to the knurled nuts on table lamp gallery springs?

I think you have done well obtaining it and with the woven mantle, though it may well need replacing. I like the round spherical wire replacement ones from England. The guard is also there which is a bonus as they are often missing. Good luck with it.

Yes, the mantle is a nice bit of originality. I do have a couple of NOS woven asbestos mantles, though for running probably safer with the mesh mantle.

    @Jacky Young
It’s some way down the queue, but will get fettled. I usually like to keep originality, in this case it will get polished up as it was originally a lacquered brass finish.

Looking at the heater fount today, it has the deep hole, so I’m assuming it would have originally had the longer control cock.

You should be able to find the correct period parts. I have a steel tank R1 with that reflector, but it takes the GF control cock.

    Cheers
