Tilley R1 Heater Steel Fount

Got this R1 yesterday thought before we do a full restoration that I would see how see runs.
A quick fettle and a flush out, some new seals as well.
I believe the control cock valve is a Kayen one looks identical to my other Kayen one's, I know for sure that the vaporiser is a Kayen
So here are some photos to look at.

She works not too bad the vaporiser needs replacing and a good old polish of the reflector. I'm happy with my old new Tilley heater for now, that is.

 

Looks like a good candidate for the "buggerlugs touch", I look forward to seeing how it turns out

 

That’s looking good, the mesh guard appears to be in good condition.

 

Perhaps it's worse than it looks in the images but it looks O.K. to me.

 

With winter on the way now is the time to tidy it up.

 

Are you certain the control cock is Kayen?

I said at the time:

Yes it’s interesting having a Tilley R1 with a steel tank, so probably 1940 to 1945. My understanding from what others have told me previously on this site, is that during World War II Tilley used steel tanks for some things. The GF control cock is also Tilley and some during the War were brass bodied fitted with brass knobs but retained steel threads on the knob shaft. The pump had the same paint as the fount so I think it's Tilley but remains to be seen.

See if a magnet sticks to the shaft of the control cock.

I was relooking at your nice Tilley R1. I noticed that your guard has 4 rings and I thought these were the last of the Tilley guards from around 1954 onwards (compared to the 1 and 3 ring guards being earlier), but I believed steel founts were around the war years. So I'm puzzled by a steel fount with a 4 ring guard as the time periods seem different.

It's better to have a guard than nothing though.

 

Hi I've changed the vaporiser over to a Tilley one, you were correct there wasn't anything wrong with the vaporiser.
The problem was the leather had half broken and wasn't getting enough pressure to the burner and I didn't want to over pressurise the lamp, so here are some more photos.

Can you notice the difference now?

 

Yes, the way it's burning now makes the mantle look pink in the previous images.

 

I agree ... pink tinge before... cherry and orange now .. great pics! :-)

edit: agree .. all guards are good, even if homemade or lidl fruit bowl (seasonal)

 

Hello all I thought that I might polish the reflector up today, she has can up just wonderful.
So now it's time to see if there is a difference in heat, from not being polished and polished, which I believed there would be.
Wow the difference is amazing now see really gives out some nice heat, I'm very happy with the results.
So here are some photos to look at.

 

It will be the same amount of heat produced by the burner, but more will be reflected by the reflector.
