I could be incorrect but the lamp looks larger than an Austramax ,size against mug and hand, could be vent slots in collar also . I did a little simple enhancement . What do others think ??
I think, given the hand size versus the lantern glass, that is not an Austramax. Also, if it were, it would most likely not have that globe/chimney. Cheers Tony
That's what I thought, but wouldn't rule out the possibility. Looking again, I am fairly convinced it isn't an Austramax. Now the question is what it could be. It looks in the style of a Petromax, but what would the RAAF have used in New Guinea in 1944? Probably anything they could get their hands on.
Yes, the globe cage support and hood made me think it was a Petromax or one of the European clones...
That old photo certainly features a Petromax-like lantern. I do not know if any Petromaxes had been in use by the RAAF, European settlers or by any indigenious locals in the former Dutch New Guinea during or before WWII. Some possibilities that it could be item captured from the Japanese during the campaign. If so, that could well be any Chinese Petromax clone which, the Japanese somehow took to the Pacific after their invasion of China earlier. These would hardly, if ever, be recorded in war history. Well, it could be written in some soldier's logbook if you are lucky enough to find that.
Thanks for the replies . Whatever the Noemfoor lantern is , it appears to be in reasonably good condition, not bashed about. I lean towards the idea that it was landed on the island with the other RAAF equipment stores.
If the Noemfoor lantern was an RAAF issued item, then I don't see much reasons that its not any Australian-made units such as any one of from Aladdin, Austramax, Handi, Kayen... Any clues from www.mapleleafup.net or elsewhere?
