Off on a trip north this evening to run a Tilley session with a Scout Troop. Lamps checked and ready to go. They have some of their own to play with, so we'll cover servicing and lighting, bringing their lamps back into regular use
I have friends who live in Newbury (south England). In a pub I got talking to one of their friends. He told me that he had been to the north once. He had attended a conference in Birmingham! British members will know why that is funny.
Enjoyable evening with the Scouts. We talked about the history of Tilley, how they work and showed them a selection of lamps; PL53, Pork Pie, Guardsman, X246A, X246B and an AL21. We then showed how to dismantle their unloved X246A and how to change the seals. Next came a test burn with the hood / burner from another lamp to demonstrate the bunsen flames and safe lighting technique, while we tied a mantle on their burner and lamp lit. Success ! Time for the Scouts to have a go at lighting...... at which point the Leader informed us there was only 10 minutes left of their meeting...... What happened to the last 90 minutes?? Happy to have left them with the knowledge and parts to bring their other lamps back into regular use
I know - I go there for my holidays! - and much further beyond, as it happens. But it makes me wonder; who lives the furthest north or south? I guess Tony Press is the furthest south - when he's at work, anyway, and I can't see anyone beating him in the foreseeable future...
Hello David, I recall that you have visited this old rock a couple of times and that you also went to Iceland, I considered taking a trip to the Faroe Islands and Iceland and perhaps on to Greenland, but the ferry stopped calling into Shetland, it still makes the voyage from Denmark to the Faroes and Iceland. Many folk from other parts of the UK., and further afield move to Shetland, but the vast majority of them do not stay long as the winters can be very harsh here and there are cultural differences too.
