Here's an X359 I picked up a while ago, I think I'm lucky because I managed to get one with a fully functioning preheater. The lamp does also have quite a lean to one side as well, the first picture may be exaggerating it slightly, but it is there due to misalignment of parts during manufacture.
Hi Tony, it's difficult to see if all of the parts are off centre, but the most obvious is seen in the 3rd picture above. If you look at the top of the tank you can see a stamped contour where the boss for the control cock is soldered. The boss is not centre of the contour and the contour is not stamped squarely in the tank. I'm not sure if this is due to manufacturing fault or if it was done intentionally to offset the vapouriser in the glass so there was room for the preheater. I assume the studs and cage are offset aswell so that the hood sits properly when mounted on the vapouriser.
Great job Matthew. That is the first time I have seen a 359 pre-heater work and that not only works but works very well. Even the glass is still spotless. Thanks for you efforts.
nice lamp matt I liked the video too I have never seen one of these in action I must say it looks very efficient or maybe its your skill at using the heater great post matt pete
Thanks @JEFF JOHNSON and @Anthony I took the video a while ago, but thought I'd wait for this new forum platform so I could put the video directly into this thread. I know these pre-heaters have mixed results, so when mine worked so well, I thought it would be nice for other to see it in action. I doubt it'll get used too much though, as I don't want to damage it. Thanks @pete sav I haven't worked out how long it needs to heat the burner fully, it may not have needed as much as I gave it, but I didn't want a flare up on camera.
Hi matt preheat time is 1 minute in the tilley instruction leaflet but better more than risk flare ups pete
Looks like they’re out there. After seeing Matthews X359 preheater running I just gotta get mine running. Should be an experience. Cheers Pete
