Anthony, Bob and I have been pondering the origin of the top domed insect screens seen on some Tilley and Kayen table lamps in the Southern Hemisphere.

Here are two domed insect screens that sit on top of a Tilley or Kayen table lamp gallery.

The one on the left has its small holes arrayed in parallel or concentric circles around the centre hole. It appears as if this pattern would have to have been manufactured before the insect screen was punched out of a steel sheet and pressed into its domed shape. Note also the centre hole with its plain bare edge.

The one on the right has been punched out of a steel sheet with a continuous grid pattern of holes.

Jean’s lamp from Zimbabwe in this thread, has the second kind of insect screen.

My question, particularly to folk in the UK, is what version of the domed insect screen have you seen, and where was the lamp bought originally?

    Cheers

    Tony

Tilley lamp bug screens are not that common in the UK., and I have never seen a domed one.

Both my Kayens have the smooth inner edge screen. They are one each of a Nettlefold and a Kopsen, but no guarantee that the screens are original to the lamps.

I intend meeting up with the chap who sold me the lamps next week and will ask if he knows where some of the bits and pieces in that lot came from. I seem to remember that he told me his brother-in-law bought a lot in auctions so perhaps there will be no more information forthcoming. I’m going to drop off a box of wine since he would only accept a pitiful amount of money for the lamps. Can show him some pics of the ones I’ve managed to clean up.

    Top insect Guards :-
Just did a quick check around and I have concentric pattern domed on 1 246 some pork pies and flat perforated sheet guards on others
Also AP2 and HL7 have flat and domed top insect screens in domed concentric and flat perf sheet.
The change may be a cost factor thing as the dies for concentric screens and doming would be more expensive than punching (effectively) a large washer from perforated sheet

    @Graham P

I agree with your thinking about cost.

I have one of those concentric-holes domed insect screens that has been punched off centre. There would be more waste making them.

Tony, whilst looking at the hoods on the Kayen AP2s for Attention all Kayen Owners.... I took note of the insect screens.

The five Kopson AP2s had domed insect screens with small holes arrayed in parallel or concentric circles around the centre hole. Also the centre hole had a plain bare edge. The Nettlefold AP2 did not have an insect screen.

I have a Nettlefold HL7 table lamp with a domed insect screen punched out of a steel sheet with a continuous grid pattern of holes.

All my Tilleys have flat insect screens punched out of a steel sheet with a continuous grid pattern of holes

Just to update you Tony, the chap I bought the lamps from was away on holiday - to Zimbabwe! His daughter knew nothing about the lamps.

On my AP2 it’s a domed screen with concentric holes around a rimmed centre hole for the burner’s dome.
