Can someone please tell me why are these two cocks different. One is taller then the other and if you look at the bottom rims both are different in thickness and roundness.... Why ?
Andrew, this is something I have wondered about many times. Depending how meticulous I get, I could find more than a dozen varieties. All I can come up with is that some are Tilley and some are Kayen. I have no idea which is which.
Just an idea but what if this was the first job they gave new machinists on the shop floor - something they couldn't mess up too bad. Either that or they get shorter over time and this was another cost cutting exercise.
Who knows could be. Hopefully there is someone on this forum who might have a bit more information and has the answers. Colin your answer could be plausible.
Tony Press knows only that the Kayen and Tilley control cocks look very similar. If you know what knob was on the cock that helps (sometimes). The Tilley control cocks of each different type should be consistent in their dimensions. If you have an odd sized one, it could be Kayen. I’ll look at my Kayens later and see if any pattern emerges. But my opinion is that if @Anthony can’t tell the difference, no one can... Cheers Tony
Darren The closest control cock I’ve found to the left hand side one in your photos is this: This was not attached to a lamp. The odd thing about it is the diagonal knurling that I’ve not seen on other control cocks; and the tapered filter cup at the bottom... Cheers Tony @Kiwiboy00 @JEFF JOHNSON @Mackburner @Henry Plews @Anthony
Thankyou Anthony - ColinG - Jeff Johnson - Tony Press...... Appreciate everyone’s input. I was told this by another collector that the one with the wider band on the bottom will be a KayeN. The shorter band one is a Tilley. Kind Regards Darren
That may well be the case for that particular style (ie wide band at the bottom), but there are plenty of Kayen lamps with control cocks that look the same as the brass knobbed Tilley ones. Cheers Tony
Cheers Tony, out of 24 cocks that i brought from Jim only 2 looked like this. Plenty of them had the black plastic tilley knobs, about 8 were brass ones instead of plastic with different knurling patterns. Cheers Darren
@Kiwiboy00 I have this cock on a Kayen H7 table lamp manufactured by Nettleford overall length 39mm (exc the filter cap)
Thanks, Martin. More of that diagonal knurling, and the different filter cup (but this time with traditional Kayen diamond knurling. Cheers Tony @ROBBO55
That is identical to the one I have on my Nettlefold H7. All my Kopsen fittings have the thin lower rim like the one on the right in the original pictures.
Thanks again guys you all have been an amazing help. Ive put these 2 aside to fit to my Kayens. Sorry for the late reply works been crazy busy, all work and no play. Kind Regards Darren
Thanks Tony, I hadn't taken much notice of the knurling. Good to know. I haven't fettled this one yet. The cock with the wider rim is also shown on this Nettlefold in the reference gallery Kayen HL7 (Nettlefold)
