    I recently acquired a Canadian 247 lantern.

The lantern does indeed look pretty good but someone tried and failed to fettle this little beauty. The pricker control was reversed so in other words when the lever was up the pricker wasn't engaging the jet/nipple aperture. The most likely cause of this was the pricker control was seized and the would be fettler twisted the pricker lever. This was an easy fix but still whoever did this was a mindless buffoon. I have some smooth jaw pliers so I applied some heat and bent the lever back to it's proper position.

There was years and years of dried up fuel in the bottom of the fuel tank. I used some Acetone and was able to remove all of the dried up fuel.

The generator/vaporizer was totally plugged so I replaced it with a new 201 generator.

Apparently this lantern had been leaking fuel so the idiot added thread sealing paste anywhere and everywhere. I guess if all else fails apply copious amounts of thread sealer because it is sure to work.
It took a bit of time to get this all cleaned up. Whoever did this was about 5 cans short of a six pack.

What I found when I dismantled this lantern was the graphite packing was missing and the generator nut was loose also the preheater cup was twisted so I replaced it with a new one. I replaced the graphite packing once this was done it was now time to reassemble the lantern.

The nickel plating is still in pretty good shape. As can be seen it was made in April of 1949.

The hood has a few chips but still in pretty good shape.

The collar is in very good shape.

    Here are the money shots.

The mantle I used was a Peerless 2C-HG and when it burned in it shrunk way too much so I changed the mantle and the results were a much better light output.

    I'm pleased with this lantern.

Nice lantern. I’m hoping to find a Made in Canada one some day.

    Thanks guys.

Yes I am very pleased with this 247 lantern, but you should have seen it when I unboxed this lantern because it was a bloody damn mess. There was thread sealing paste all over the control valves, collar, lower part of the frame and some had leaked onto the fuel tank/fount.](*,)

To be truthful I'm surprised this 247 turned out as good as it has. To clean this lantern up I used Bar Keepers Friend. This also works quite well on brass and stainless steel.

I stated above that whoever tried and failed to fettle this lantern was 5 can/bottles short of a six pack, maybe I should have said he has a negative 10 IQ. In other words he is a real dumb arse. A 5 year old could have done a better job.:-k

    Cheers,
    Norman

That's a damned nice lantern you have there! BTW some people (the previous owner!) should NEVER be allowed to touch a grand old lantern like yours, let alone try to restore one! You've done a great service and fettled it back from the brink!

    Hi Colin,

You are correct about some people not being allowed to touch a lantern or stove.
Yep when I opened the box the 247 was knocking on heavens door. I truly thought at first this lantern was a basket case. I'm very pleased the 247 has turned out as well as it has considering the botched job the previous owner did on her.

Thank you for your very kind comment.

    @JEFF JOHNSON,

Thank you Jeff for your very kind comments also.

    Cheers,
    Norman
