I was out today minding my own business when wandering in a junk shop this beastie jumped out at me.

    14AD1390-890E-4D38-8292-264F7893376F.jpeg

It has the original globe, but alas, it’s broken. All the correct parts are present and the tank, on inspection, looks to be sound.

Anyway, I studiously ignored it, but it’s constant whining and pleading won me over. So I parted with $40 Australian, and now it sits in my workshop.

This is all @ColinG and @Norman fault. Seriously, I’m as happy as a pig in ........ fertiliser. :D/

It’s now on the top of the fettle list and I’ll attend to it when I return from Norfolk Island.

    Cheers
    Pete

@ Aussie Pete : looks nice ! happy fetteling , love to see pictures of your Veritas overhauled.

Here’s a picture of the ‘ coleman fuel ‘ Veritas 350 version I have that was used in the 50’s in our dutch army.
Please note that a soldier has painted the word ‘ kero ‘ on it but that’s not correct !

    Greetz from the Netherlands,

    Tjerk

    Hi Pete,

This one should clean up nicely.

If you have a Dremel Tool and a Diamond cutting wheel for the Dremel you can shorten a Coleman 220 glass globe to fit the Veritas 350. For a job like this I prefer getting a replacement 220 glass from American Mantle because these are unmarked. These American Mantle glass globes also cost less then the Coleman 220 glass.

    Globes

I hope this information helps a bit.

    Cheers,
    Norman

I have some parts for a 350 after @Norman bought one on eBay and had it delivered to me... but when it arrived, the tank was split... not just a stress crack but quite a bit worse. If anyone needs any bits, just ask. Between us, I'm sure @Norman and I can sort something out.

    @ColinG and @Norman
Thanks mates. I was wondering about the glass, I have the Dremel tool and I can get the diamond cutting wheel. Thanks Norman for the link to American Mantle, awesome.
When I get back from my travels I’ll be starting the fettle and I do appreciate your kind offers of help, and of course, the help is reciprocated whenever you need it.
I’ll document the entire fettle in my usual way.
Once again, thanks for your support. It’s great to have mates all over the world.
    Cheers
    Pete

    Hi Pete,

Pete mates are just the family you never knew you had.

The 2 Veritas lanterns I have came from the UK from sellers who didn't or wouldn't ship to the US. So I had them shipped to Colin. @ColinG does fantastic work and he does a more then professional job of painting. Colin mated a 9955 and a 350 to make one Veritas lantern and the reason why he did this was mostly because the support frame on the 9955 was butchered and the fuel tank on the 350 was not repairable. Colin painted the fuel tank from the 9955 a very nice green which is a very close match the the green hood. I still have some work to do on my 9955/350 lantern. The jet is oversized and there's still a restriction somewhere in the fuel system but I'll figure it out one of these days when I have the time to dismantle it and do a thorough inspection.
I'm still on the prowl for a Veritas 350 lantern so sooner or later one will show up either in the UK or Australia or maybe here in the US.

I'm looking forward to your fettling presentation.

I hope you have a safe journey.

    Cheers,
    Norman

G'day Pete... just admiring the 350 at the top of this thread. Just wondering if it got the fettle? Maybe it's on another post, I'd just be keen to see the process.

    @Damien
The Fettle was successfully completed and documented. It’s in the Fettling Forum section. Just go to it and scroll down to the date 29 January 2020 and the heading:
    Veritas 350A - Fettle

I think there is a way of put a link to it but I don’t know how to do it.

    Cheers

    G'day fellas.
Just wondering what that black knob on the right does? Does it alter the amount of kero that goes up the vapouriser, i.e. is it essentially what makes the lamp burn brighter, and in effect it can also turn the lamp off? 20200415_094200.jpg

    Hi @Damien
The large black knob on the right is the valve fuel shut-off and the smaller black lever type knob on the left is the generator jet pricker mechanism operator.

    32674B97-7B0E-481B-A03C-4F2717DE900B.jpeg

Due to the shallow angle of the shaft’s needle portion that adjusts in the valve seat, the black knob is really a on/off control. However it is possible, by trying to find the sweet spot, to get some unreliable regulation.
    Cheers

    Cheers Pete.
More dramas. I'm not getting any jet or flow up the vapouriser tube... nothing's jetting out of the nipple etc. I've pumped the thing, but not sure if it's holding pressure, but cannot visualise nor hear any leaking air. If it is in fact leaking, will this completely inhibit the vapouriser from actually drawing up fuel? I've thrown a photo of the disassembled parts and I'm wondering if any of these, or all of these, threads could be the culprit. I've screwed the main valve back on the fount with a makeshift leather washer... could this be the problem? 20200424_104543.jpg 20200424_104438.jpg

    Hi @Damien
The first thing to check is that the pump is actually pumping air. I do this by ensuring that the fuel valve is closed taking off the fuel filler cap and placing a thumb over the opening as a seal. I then operate the pump for about 10 pumps. If the pump is actually pumping, when I remove my thumb, air is heard escaping.
If no air escapes, check the pump leather is sealing and oiled. Then the NRV (Non Return Valve located in the bottom of the pump tube) needs to be checked. Quite often, as in my case the NRV was leaking and allowing any pumped air back out after each stroke thereby not allowing air into the tank. To remove the NRV, a tool can be purchased from Juliands, via eBay.

    9FB8570A-30EF-494E-B370-D3F9CEBAFC56.jpeg FF491D26-24CF-4D3C-9365-200DA1C69CCA.jpeg 877C20FC-6763-4EB7-B6E3-E3A3EC113BA3.jpeg

Alternative a largish steel bar with a 5mm slot cut into the bottom may be used. The slot has to fit over the NRV’s head, the snugger the better. Unscrew the NRV. (lefty loose, righty tightly).

Once the NRV has been removed and cleaned, soak it in penetrating oil for a while and then place it in a vice that’s gripping the NRV’s head, firmly not too tightly.

    0A6ADC44-140D-4A4B-A47D-196FD1B3ECCF.jpeg

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO UNSREW THE BARREL FROM THE HEAD USING THE SCREWDRIVER LOOKING SLOT IN THE END OF THE NRV BARREL. THE NRV WILL BE DESTROYED.
Using a pair of pliers and a strip of leather or rubber, grip the NRV’s barrel and with moderate force unscrew the barrel.

    A6C9FC2F-DB55-46D6-BE3C-7ECD594B8547.jpeg

You will find a spring and a brass carrier with a pip inserted inside it. The spring and carrier must be cleaned and must move freely within the barrel’s bore. The pip will need to be replaced. I use a pip punched out of a sheet of 3mm Viton, bought from eBay.
With the serviced NRV replaced, repeat the earlier air pump test. You should have air escape when you release your thumb.
If not then I would now replace the fuel cap seal. You can make one from Viton rubber or temporary use a O ring or another gasket. I would now remove the valve fuel pickup assembly from the tank. Ensure that the pickup tube is not buried in sludge at the bottom of the tank. With the valve open you should be able to blow through or suck through air. If not then it’s blocked. Diluted citric acid or vinegar can be used also a wire pricker to try to clean out the obstruction. I actually use a ultrasonic cleaner to do this job. I then, after checking that the assembly is clear by sucking one end, screw the cleaned assembly back into the tank using a pipe sealant on the threads for a good seal. On mine, I didn’t replace/use a gasket.
After the valve assembly has been cleaned, cleared and installed ensuring that the pickup tube is clear at the bottom, the NRV has been serviced and replaced and the fuel cap has been made air tight, the pump’s leather oiled, you should now be able to pump up the tank.
    Hope this helps.
Let me know how you go.
    Cheers
    Pete

Or use a loose drill chuck. I have found this the best way to grip a NRV barrel (and lots of other parts).

The slot at the top can also be used with a screwdriver if you fix the other end in the vice as shown.

@Nils Stephenson thats a good clue. I never thought of gripping the NRV in a drill chuck. It’s now my preferred method.
    Thanks for sharing.

    Hi @ColinG
Yes, it can be done, however I tried it once and watched in dismay as the torque shredded the barrel. The main cause of the lamentable destruction was that the barrel had seized onto its thread and my commensurate Herculean grip of heroic gusto. Of course, obeying the law of all small and important things, it’s was the only one I had at the time.
I like the method Nils has shared and it’s going to be my preferred method.
    Cheers
    Pete

Morning to you too @AussiePete Yes, I wanted to be up and welcome the dawn in honour of our fallen.

Thanks for the info on the materials used. The plating on the tank looks to be very good quality. Is the same quality apparent on the collar?

I looked for your fettle - twice. I can't see it. Copy and paste the line from your browser into this topic and it will create a link.

Been out at my little property near a town called Neville, NSW. Only mention it because I haven't been able to thank Pete, Nils, et al. due to the fact there's no service of any kind out there.
Eternally grateful for this, and every other thread. I didn't even know that this part existed... and that's AFTER looking at the diagram in the reference library!
So is the actual Non Return Valve inside the mixing valve that screws into the fount?
