Tilley Guardsman

Hi all,

My second attempt for building and restoring a Tilley Guardsman after my first attempt with my dad's Tilley hospital wall lamp.
I bought all the pieces separately and try to keep the original part as much as possible, the only issue was with the hood as there no chance to find a brown hood in a good shape this days.
Everything went smooth, I remove the tank paint and polish the brush, also paint the cage with chrome radiator spray and to my opinion the finish is good.

I am experiencing a pressure loss due to the pump leaking air between the clamp and the inner screw cap. I replaced the leather cup and the NRV with no success. I've attached a picture with arrows showing the air leak. I wonder if I missed a gasket but I could get any info for the butterfly type pump.

Any help would be very welcome

 

I would say the pump seal is leaking. On these pumps they usually have a carrier that supports the rubber washer. Pic attached may help.

The washer is in place as your picture suggest, I decided to change it but the washer I had it was 154 and it was a bit larger than the one fitted so I refitted the existing as it was in not a bad shape.

Would you suggest a p/n for this washer?

Looks to be a good fettle.. Hope you can get the leak sorted.. you're nearly there

 

I agree with Gary. It seems to me your filler/pump washer is leaking pressure from the tank (not through the NRV.

Try putting some Vaseline on the washer and hand tightening the pump a bit more.

Not sure what that means.
if your having to use an old washer you can try turning it around, but I would say it’s that washer that is causing the trouble.

Part Number 154 “clamp washer” but specify for 1950s X246.

The 154 clamp washer it is specified on the pre 1960's Guardsman guide it is wider. If anyone knows the correct part and has a link to provide it would very helpful.

 

Try looking to the right of the screen for the 'Fettlebox' you'll find the washers there

 

The wingnut pump the seal washer sits in a narrow washer with a raised outer edge washer is 15/16 O/D - 11/16 I/D - 3/32 thick (dims in inches)
took pics but my photos are giving me a hard time with new v old systems

 

I think you have done excellent work there mate.
It's must be time for your third attempt.

 

The washers from the Fettlebox fitted like glove, service of the Guardsman's completed and now keeping company to the hospital lamp decorated for Christmas

They look very festive with those Santa hats on. I particularly like the view of all that lamp fuel on the wall to the right of the cupboard.... cheers!
