Hi fellas, a bit of advice please, can the s shaped gen be cleared , I have one, the fuel dose pass through it, it sprays out the jet about a few cm or about an inch or to, not always in a steady stream Any suggestions or method greatly appreciated. Any alternative, I did look in old Coleman part couldn’t find one but what would be my next best thing Thanks
When I’ve got the jet cleared and the burner going this picture is what I get, I hope it helps with my issue
Have you tried an ultrasonic cleaner? I do my q99’s now in my ultrasonic cleaner, also my Tilley vaporizers and came out pretty clean
Darryl, I haven't tried it but these posts might help (assumeing they are similar internally). Restoring Q99's & safe starting procedure for Quick-Lites 1921/22 Akron Diamond 103G... The Diamond Light
Hi fellas, I’ve followed the advice from the fellas above mentioned links Cleaned the s shape generator as best I could, has turned out good, clear strong flow through generator, I cleaned and cleared the jet, it shoots a steady stream of fuel, I’ve put it back together, a little cough and splutter and away it goes. Very pleased with my fettle It has an original mica globe that I will Replicate I would like to acknowledge the fellas for their help and wisdom @ROBBO55 @Pancholoco1911
Well done @Darryl Durdin I have one of these lanterns, an Akron Diamond 103G, and they do run a treat. By the style of hood, yours looks to be earlier than mine. Enjoy. Cheers mate Pete
Hi fellas I’m having issues, it was going great but I have poor flow, but seems good when straight out the jet, doesn’t burn bright and I now have a continuous small flame burning where the jet enters the air burner port/hole you can see the flame, open to suggestions I think I’m back to the drawing board
Hi Darryl, is the jet tight and sealing correctly ? Try a little nickel (or copper) based grease on the threads. It's possible that the generator has developed a crack which could be difficult to see with the naked eye so check with a magnifying glass. If this is the case, a dab of silver solder should cure the problem.
I think I would have to go with Henry here. If it was some sort of obstruction pushing gas back down the burner and out of the hole where the generator goes in I would ahve thought it would make a bit of a skirt of flame, rather than the jet you have. I recall using "dye penetrant" many years ago to check welds. This might show a very fine crack. Keep going Darryl it is too good a lamp to fail !
@Darryl Durdin I reckon that Henry and Fireexit are on the money here. It’s certainly the first place to look. If the flame was caused by back pressure, as a result of a partial blockage, then I would expect to see a sheeting, or as Fireexit said a skirt of flame, not a single jet. Have you a spare generator to compare? Cheers Pete
Hi fellas, I checked it out with my magnifying glass, I could not see any cracks, I cleared the jet, I poked a guitar string down the generator a fair bit of carbon black was flushed out, I have als screwed down the cage plate a bit mor so the jet was inside the air fuel tube a bit more, I had it going great but later when I had shut it down and restarted the jet was part part blocked, I cleared it a good jet of fuel spayed up 3-400mm high. I reassemble it, it did flare up but settled to a full glow, I’m happy with it, I’ll just have to clear the jet a bit more befor use. The money shot, I’m impressed quite bright
Well I am pleased it was nothing too serious ! Each time you clean it it should get a bit better I guess. Out of interest did you try the ultrasonic cleaning ?
Bright enough now @Darryl Durdin Old generators can sometimes be tiresome. I've had similar troubles, countless cycles of heat & quench combined with copious quantities of carburettor cleaner and compressed air until fuel comes through as clean as a whistle yet in no time at all, the jet becomes blocked with carbon. I can only echo @Fireexit1 's sentiments.
