Veritas Superb - Worth the drive

It should be reasonably easy to do the 350 I reckon. I’d end up needing to add a 350 to my collection then though! Well if I must!

 

My transfer is the same type as ScottD's.
Its as near as dammit 90mm x 40mm over the black border lines.

Thanks Pete. I made a couple more tweaks to the design tonight and with the final dimensions, I will order up the water slide samples and see how that goes.

 

Excellent.... genuinely getting excited now!

 

Next step complete, I now have a decent quality print on waterslide inkjet paper. (Still debating lightening the red on the “Made in England” banner but I can amend that easily enough for the next print run).

Sealed with 3 thin coats of lacquer. Once that has dried, it’s application time, test fount first though I reckon!

Not a great first test applying it. The colours ran and it was impossible to get the slide off the backing. Need to try the specified sealer as I just used some spray lacquer I had. I may just cheat now I have the artwork though and find a professional printer.

 

@Scott D design wise, I think you’ve nailed it.

Would an option be to apply the waterslide straight from the printer and then lacquer over the top when it's dry?

I have made waterslide decals in the past, and I think that lacquer should've worked for you. Perhaps you trimmed the decal too close to the ink? I usually need to leave at least 0.75mm or so around the ink, sometimes more.

Also, try a tiny drop of dishsoap in the water to help the backing release.

 

Exciting delivery this morning! Professionally printed water slides. Scarily the sheet cost me twice as much as the lantern did! Look really good though, the gold is far better than I expected. Will be trying them out this weekend and will let you know how I get on!

 

Well it is an excuse to fettle more Veritas Superb lanterns ? - seriously tho - a top job Scott...

 

It goes without saying that I'll definitely buy a couple at least!

Hopefully I’ll get to it today and give them a go. The fount has been painted for a few weeks awaiting the slides. Once I know they work and will stand up to a clear coat, I’ll put a couple of spares away for my future use and the rest can be up for grabs. I’m conscious that these are my best effort at replicating the logo, not an exact reproduction. They will serve my purpose but will likely fall short for the historians out there. It has been really interesting and rather enjoyable to get it to this point though.

 

What software did you use to make the design? I created a replacement logo for a Bialaddin 315 (although I haven't printed it yet) using Adobe illustrator. I could send you my graphic if you want to try it out.

 

My Adobe CS subscription lapsed a while ago, so it was done using Publisher. Fortunately it is a fairly simple design. The only really complicated bit was adjusting the font. I found an old Script font that was really close but it needed a few tweaks to get it closer to the original.

 

Ha ha, I used to use Creative we Suite all the time but the company I worked for was too tight to buy new licences so I always used a 'hookey' copy!!

 

I had planned on waiting until after I’d clear coated and rebuilt the lantern to share, but I’m just a bit too excited! This was the first attempt at applying the slide, the colours held fast and it was strong enough to be repositioned. Assuming it now dries ok and accepts the clear coat then, I may have cracked it! Hopefully!!

Anyone any thoughts on the likely impact of clear coating over the decal? I would be using an XHT clear lacquer as usual ideally, but the info sheet that came with the decal advised brush on film rather than spray on. So I’m now thinking a coat of brush on film over the decal, let it dry then spray my usual clear coat to finish the whole of the fount. It would be a shame to mess it up now!

 

I have no idea so if it was me I'd try a test maybe on something else first? It's a waste of a decal but it's the only way you'll find out without the risk of ruining the gold paint on the tank, I have to say, it's a blooming nice job!

 

You’re right of course, and fortunately I do have a spare fount or two lying around the garage! I was expecting to mess up a few decals anyway.

 

There's something extremely weird and disconcerting about seeing a Veritas label on a Tilley tank!

Also, who's gold paint did you use?

 

It is a bit odd, but that fount will hopefully be reused as intended one day. It has a pinhole so I replaced it with a brass donor to get my PL53 up and running again.

The gold paint was a Rustoleum. Not one I’ve used before but I wanted a metallic finish to replicate the original. It went on really well!
