Since the early days of my interest in these lamps I have wanted a Tilley “Pork Pie” and I was drawn to the early model with the flat cage ring. I also like a bargain and want the joy of the fettle. So when this popped up on FBMP a few days ago I snapped it up and only an hours drive from home into North Yorkshire this evening and I have my Pork Pie. From what I’ve read these came with a short and a long handle version of which I assume this is the longer handle as it spans almost the full height of the lamp. Impressed with the quality of this lamp. Picking it up for the first time I assumed it was full of fuel but no, it really is just that heavy. Looking forward to this fettle.

They are a very solid and heavy lamp aren't they? Well built to last that's for sure enjoy your fettle.

An hour's drive - you just doubled the "spend" in hydrocarbons before you light it
But I would do the same...
    it looks very promising

Even factoring in the diesel I reckon I still got it at a third/half eBay prices! It was a nice drive too so win win!

Nice Boxing Day light up. I finished this clean up a couple of months ago but needed a new pump for it as years of plier tightening had left the old pump actually rather sharp and dangerous. A new pump from Terry and away she goes. There was no way to save the original paint and it’s a bit shiny at the moment, but a season or two in action will settle it down!

Good restoration. The title had me thinking a long-lost meat delicacy had resurfaced unexpectedly. I wasn’t sure I wanted to read on …

I have never left an actual pork pie unattended long enough for it to be misplaced!

It is orange when cold but yes, more post box red when hot. It is a new repro, the original was past saving.

    Hi Scott,
Can I ask what paints and/or lacquers you used at all?

Hammerite Metal Paint Smooth Gold... Amazon.co.uk

    E-Tech XHT Xtremely High... Amazon.co.uk

I did the painting a couple of months ago before the cold snap. Just been waiting to get the new pump and then for me to get around to finishing it!

The XHT lacquer isn’t required on the fount for it’s heat resistance but it is very good on chemical resistance.

That would make a good pinned subsection to the fettling page. A restoration paint guide! How many times are those questions asked! There will be all sorts of info dotted through the pages but it would be good to have it all together.

    That looks a picture.
The pork pie Tilley is still on my wanted list and seeing that restoration has made me realise that I need to get looking again, can I ask where you bought the new top?
