Two of my Tilleys... A 246b that seems to be okay-(if not very bright), and a Guardsman which burns very dull. It starts okay, and runs for hours, holds pressure, but is very dull and yellowish. Would I be right in assuming that there could be carbon build up inhibiting full fuel flow?
Good idea Tony (test by substitution!) I have a few Tilleys that I can swap parts over. I disassembled and cleaned the vaporiser on the 'dullard' (plenty of crap came out, but it's no different. The brighter one does 'pulse' a bit, is that a sign of intermittent fuel flow? Or what other probs cause that?
The X-246-B pump is in the Guardsman lantern and vice versa, the fuel feed pipe in the Guardsman lantern may need to be cleaned out, it's soldered to the tank and is located in the aperture under the control cock, I use tying wire to clear the fuel feed pipes and after clearing the pipe it's best to thoroughly clean out the tank. Burners do wear out and that may be the problem. Cleaning the fuel feed pipe and the tank of the X-246-B lantern is also advisable, but the build quality of those aluminium control cocks is poor, I have found that fitting a fully refurbished brass Tilley GF., control cock improves the flow of the fuel and air mix.
