    Hi all,

This is a very rare French gravity alcohol lamp from a brand I did not know of 18 months ago.
In Jan. 2023 my French lamp friend Patrick @Titoo sent me photos of one out of three alcohol gravity lamps he had bought and asked me if I knew the brand. The logo said "Chaleur Intens Lumiere S A (marque depose)". First we did a quick research and found the owner of the brand and also the inventor, the merchant/ironmonger Joseph Siot, 39, rue de Faubourg-Montmatre, Paris. The original patent was filed in Oct. 1909 as was also the registration of the brand name (Patrick @Titoo), and in 1910-11 he was also granted patents from several countries, Switzerland, Canada and Great Britain.

The patent shows one gravity type of an alcohol fed lamp burner, but with two different versions of the generator. Both is shown in the patent, and I have seen lamps of both types.
These lamps and also the burner is pretty small in size and was said to give 40/50 CP.
The production of these lamps was probably short between 1909 to 1913.

A problem has been that we have had no ads or catalogue images of the range of lamps made, except an image of a double arm stand lamp. I was recently lucky during a research session to find an article from a 1912 Le Monde Illustrè. It shows pictures of Emile Siot and his lamp stand "Lampe Intens" during an exhibition in Roubaix 1911.

This Intens Lumiere company is for sure not the same Intens company, with lead of Paul Duriez, that later in the mid 1920,s sold pressure lamps and radiators with Aida (Hirschorn) parts. (see my Tanit lamp from Feb..... Ca. 1926 Intens Tanit table lamp).

Patrick has done a more extensive research into Mr. Siot and I hope he will reveal that when he hopefully soon will post his Intens Lumiere lamps here on this forum.

This lamp was in poor condition with several cracks in the fuel tank and poor nickel plating.
I managed to fix the tank and stripped the lamp to brass. Kind of satisfied with the outcome, although the lamp did not give a blinding light.
Nice looking lamp that now hangs on my living room wall together with other French alcohol lamp burner lamps, the Continentale Nouvelle Bec Prefere No.1 and No.2

    /Conny

    Extraordinary, Conny! I
It must be said that you and Patrick are a formidable pair of French lamp hunters. I do not despair of finding some treasures in our beautiful countryside as well, but the fight is unequal: you are too strong!!
In any case, congratulations for this exceptional find.

    His civil status:
Emile Joseph Siot was born on March 10, 1876, he died on January 15, 1937 in Reims 51454 in Champagne Ardenne at the age of 61 in France.

He married with Blanche Stéphanie Herzog on June 30, 1903 in Troyes 10387 in Champagne Ardenne in France.

He will have only one child, his daughter Nelly Siot born in 1904, who died in 1991.

He lived successively at 111 rue St Antoinne, 4th arrondissement of Paris. (no date)
At 3 rue de provence in Paris city (1913).

At 8 av Pascal in Maison Laffite (1925).

His father Oscar Siot and hardware lemonade seller in Paris.

His son Emile Joseph Siot is listed as a hardware store on June 30, 1903 at the age of 27. (no address given)
Then we find him at 7, avenue Saint Ouen in Paris. Invoice for his business attached dated December 14, 1907, written by his hand.

On May 21, 1913, the Paris trade journal noted the separation of property of Mrs. Siot, born Blanche Stéphanie Herzog (1878/1933).

I think it was a bankruptcy, but I don't have the elements, there is still research to be done.

In 1925 he was a representative in ironworks and an agent for metallurgical factories.

    That's for Mr. Siot.
There are also some gray areas to be clarified, what was the role of Mr. J P Calabarlie, the custodian of the brand.
    Associated with Mr. SIOT??

    Regards,
    Titoo.

    Thanks!

Juan - Yes I do the resto/fettling myself of all my lamps and that is maybe the most rewarding part of this hobby.
The lamp hunt and information research are also important parts.
