What a fun thing to do! Don't forget to invite the neighbors and have safe fun with a fire extinguisher nearby.
Yeah - by the size of it, it would have to be a Col-Max 222 or 333, neither of which I have seen, but if they're anything like mine they'll be chrome plated with a red enamel hat. So, I think we have an intruder as you suggest...
Good catch Guys! How did you see it was a knock-off? It was an impulse buy many years ago. It’s an American Camper 830/150CP Super (whatever that means). I lit it when I received it and a few days later I tried it again but it wouldn’t incandesce. I then sat on the shelf for a while until last summer I tried again. After several tries and tinkering, including a run with Coleman fuel, it now runs great on kerosene. Now I have a Coleman 249 running well and a 234 that I’m restoring to ad to my kerosene group. Bye the bye, is there a difference between a mantle for kerosene and gasoline? Peter
Ahh that's a sensitive eye for the different, a must for flee markets and lantern hunts. as for the mantle, there is no difference between kerosene and gasoline mantles.
As Doron said, there is basically no difference. A 200cp mantle is a 200cp mantle etc. One thing you might want to be aware of is that a kerosene lamp likes plenty of heat in the generator. Some mantles tend to form more 'tubular' so they are further away from the generator. Generally a round forming mantle works well with kerosene lanterns as it gets it closer to the generator. There are many variations of burner so this is not always the case.
Hi Peter, With respect to the 249, the #999 Hi Power mantle made its debut with that lantern. Before that the spec'd mantle for all the Coleman single mantle lanterns was the #21. This info is shown in the Coleman 1955 parts catalog illustration for 237/249 as a 099-333 part number. The 249 has a larger burner tube/cap 249-324/249-370 than the 200(A)or 242. Perhaps Coleman decided a larger mantle was needed for this model. This info can be viewed on Dan Boschen's website "Old Dirty Coleman Paper". 1955 Coleman Parts Catalog pdf Page 11. Bob
