Or is it a mix of different parts? I know it has been repainted. The enameled top is also a new reproduction, I put it there myself. I don´t mind if is put together from different Vapalux parts, considering what I paid for it and how nice it burns. Just want to know what it is. Steel tank and frame. Intendation (I think?) at the top of the tank. Not marked "Halifax" at the hood. 1945 crows foot. Appreciate any kind of shared knowledge. 8)
Not an expert, but having one of my own I can see one odd item: The spirit cup is home made. There should be a full circle plate that covers the well, and whose outer edge sits on the ledge close to the glass base. The plate is indented in the centre for a meths reservoir, and it has a concentric set of small holes near the outer edge for passage of air. But if it burns well - be happy! Pre-heater wick looks about right.
Mr Ashton would be the best person to answer, but I believe that spirit cup is actually the correct one for the lamp. These early ones with the slotted collar above the tank and the flying saucer shaped control cock hole all seem to have the smaller diameter cup. I think that originally it would have had a glass with the lighting hole as well. Very nice lamp.
Yes - as I see it there were two ways to achieve even, all-round airflow around the mantle. You could have a complete row of slots in the collar and thus the spirit cup shown so as not to impede that flow. Otherwise the single triangular hole in the collar and the even, all-round airflow was achieved by the perforated plate preheater. More importantly, the lantern shown does not have the E41's separate galley and plain hood so it's not one of those...
looks the same as mine but a whole lot cleaner!the pre-heat cup looks correct I have seen the other one described but not on these,as a matter of interest is the transfer a repro or just some careful masking up before paint?tony
It´s a repro. Thank you for your insights guys. What made me wonder was the lack of the Vapalux - Made in England on the hood.
Model 300 for sure. Possibly all correct as well as all the parts are from the period but there are so many variations out there that is a hard call. I would expect this lamp to have a lighting hole in the globe but possibly by 1945 that was dropped. I am not sure but Ian will know. Nice restoratiuon job. ::Neil::
