Found this rare beast today at the swap ,my mate saw it and left it but I saw something about this one its not a Lamp but Lantern missing its cowl .
Help need picture of what it looks like .
The mantle for this looks to be a preformed one with 3 lugs on it

    Wow! Very nice, Bob.

I've often thought (probably completely wrongly) that Kerona, was short for Kero-NZ-Aus...

I've never figured out whether they were made in Australia, New Zealand or both.

I hope you can get this working again.

    Cheers

That is a rare one. I didn't even know there was a lantern model.

Hello Bob, that is an excellent find and the link below shows the relevant pages for Kerona table lamps and they may give you ideas about the design of the lantern hood.

It may be possible to adapt some other type of lantern hood to fit your lantern.

I do not recall seeing a Kerona lantern before, Jeff.

In all the adverts and such for Kerona in Australia there is no mention of a lantern. They certainly made hollow wire systems which were offered for sale from May 1912 and the ads continue to August 1925. An article dated February 1914 states that Mr Preston attempted to find an English firm to make the lamps but was unsuccessful and placed the order with a German company. This article also states that the NZ rights had been sold for £3000.

So at least in the beginning the lamps were made in Germany. There may have been some difficulty with importing German product after August 1914 and there is a gap in the adverts from Novemeber 1916 to November 1919 which perhaps indicates stock ran out and production only re commenced in 1919. From then to 1925 we only have adverts from W Secombe in Coffs Harbour who state they are district agents for Kerona. Then in June 1925 there is an ad by Hunts Oil Gas who state they are manufacturers. Their last ad is dated 28 August 1925 and it is perhaps reasonable to assume that no Kerona lamps were sold after this. This makes sense because by 1925 sales of 80 cp table lamps and hollow wire fittings would have been difficult in the face of competition from Electricity and the American companies such as Coleman and Gloria-Knight Light. There is no indication of who made Aus Kerona from 1919 to 1925 but it may well have been Hunts.

    @Lamp_Doctor

Just an update on your statement above: "the burner set up not for a normal mantle must be earlier than the table lamp".

I have been fiddling with my Kerona Table Lamp, and it has exactly the same burner. There is a part missing: a ring that fits over the three blades at the top of the burner. That ring has a groove to tie a burner onto. The reason I know this, is that I was working on mine with two of @Mickoztas' Keronas:

    My burner:

Mick's. Same burner, but with the ring-thing fitted.

I have 3 of these available, as best I can measure 15.5 I/D of arms (they look too small to me)

I'll have as many as you wish to let go (if they fit).

    I'll send you a message.

    Above I said:

"That ring has a groove to tie a burner onto".

I should have said "That ring has a groove to tie a mantle onto".

    Cheers

    I have some of these...

    IMG_20180702_141634.jpg
    IMG_20180702_141725.jpg

The small ones have an inner ring diameter of 19mm and the legs protrude 2mm allowing them to slip over a circle of roughly 15mm.

The large ones have an inner ring diameter of 25mm (probably 1inch) and the three legs protrude about 2mm, maybe aittle more, allowing them to fit over a circle of about 21mm.

If either of these might be useful I have quite a few. Likewise, if anyone else has a device that these might fit, make me an offer. I have 24x small mantles and 36x large. I'd be happy selling them singly or in multiples.

Armed with a Dremel and some patience I suspect it would be possible to either remove the legs completely or trim them back a bit.

Excuse the lousy photo but the legs can be easily cut away with a pair of wire cutters without damaging the mantle, however, grinding the stumps flat wrecked the delicate weave.

The inside diameter is very close to 25mm, just a smidge less than a Petromax style pepperpot burner.

When the sun rises I will take the burner off the lantern and take photos and measure it.

    Cheers.
