Just returned from an excellent day at The Historic Lighting Club meet at North Tuddenham, Norfolk. There were a good selection of “pressure bombs” and “wicky cr@p” as well as carbide lighting. Met up with Daniel Edwards and a few other friends I know from Wheels By Lamplight (Ipswich Transport Museum), as well as making new friends. Especially interesting was a display and talk about early bicycle lights encompassing candle, wick and acetylene, from a person who collects 100+ year old bicycles and all associated periphery. A nice crossover of interests. If you don’t already know about The Historic Lighting Club check out their website: Home A very friendly, welcoming and interesting group of enthusiasts.
@X246A Thanks for the photos. It looks like an interesting assortment of lighting gear. I like the carbide bicycle lanterns. Cheers Tony
Looks like a lovely day out. There are some interesting and desirable lamps or lanterns in those photos.
Many thanks for the kind words folks! @Henry Plews the photos are courtesy of an iPhone 6. No real skill, just point and press! Regards Jeremy
Hi @X246A , that bicycle is very special! Any info on make/age please? Some very nice lamps/lanterns too, I do like the old wickies and candle lamps, they have a long standing history. The first vehicle lamps were using candles, then wick followed by carbide lamps. Lovely exhibition, thanks for sharing! Best regards, Wim
Hi Wim We were told the bicycle was a Dursley Pederson from 1913 which was towards the end of production. The collector whose name eludes me at present only collects bicycles and associated items older than 100 years, and also has a lady’s version dating from 1908. You are correct in saying the lamps started as candle, progresses to wick and finally carbide and there were several versions of each type on show. He also had a very early Lucas hub lantern made of steel designed specifically for a high ordinary bicycle which is more commonly known as the penny farthing. It was a small but really nice and friendly meeting and I would recommend any CPL member to consider joining. The HLC is an English based international club and their Bi-annual magazine, The Midnight Oil is available world wide. All the best. Regards Jeremy
It's nice to put faces to names and forum IDs! Hello Jeremy. I think we sat opposite each other at lunch today at the HLC AGM at Uffington. Phil (The Eardington Lampman)
@Phil Harris Hi Phil Sorry, it wasn’t me. I must have a doppelgänger! The only HLC meetings I have attended to date have been at North Tuddenham in Norfolk. Maybe I’ll travel a bit further one day when time allows as it is always great to meet CPL/CCS friends and put faces to names. @AussiePete Most welcome. Regards Jeremy
