Grr! Leaky washer on an X246B pump. It had gone very hard and while it was sealing between the knurled ring and the tank boss, pressure leaked out past the shoulder on the thread of the inner tube. My official spare parts kit is all gone so I was looking with hope in the collection of "O rings all types". I found an item which came in a pack of plumbing stuff from Clas Ohlson. I had used most of the 1/2" ones to fix dodgy shower heads and flexible pipe unions in Swedish hotel rooms. But the bigger ones remained. They look like this. Once the four nibs are cut away they will fit quite well in a Tilley pump ring. They might be only nitrile rubber and so they might not last for very long but since I have found no other use for them I have plenty of stock. I think 5pcs each size cost £2-50 or so. Let us see how long it runs...
Hi @JonD , Nitrile or Buna-N is good enough for kerosene. Most of the rubbers I could find for plumbing use on water valves and shower heads are made of neoprene, not nitrile. Neoprene is not fuel-resistant. So keep an eye on the seal in case its made of neoprene.
Thanks @MYN . You could be right - I don't know any way to tell those materials apart. For what it cost - almost nothing - it does not matter. It made a working lamp when otherwise all was dark. If it fails I have more. Between now and then I can find something better. That is why I chose the title = "Not too bad in an Emergency" It will be interesting to see how long it lasts.
You can try immersing a couple of pieces in kerosene for a few days to check. If they swell or harden up, they're not really the nitrile you would like.
