This is an MoD issued lamp. The lamp has no date stamp that I can find but the box is marked as 1955. There is a rubber stamp in the base with the broad arrow and 560 which may indicate a date of 1956. Has to be from about then because Tilley started to stamp the tanks with the owl logo and Tilley England in 1954 and began date stamps in the base in October 1956 so the box mark is probably correct for the date of the lamp. I would have expected to find a date stamp in the base because it is stamped with Made in England but sometimes those marks are faint and this has been over painted in olive drab which may have obscured the date mark.

This one came with box and all the parts and spares. It is a very nice complete and hardly used example of these lamps.

Do we know who were W.L. & S. Ltd.? From memory, mine has exactly the same marking and date. Presumably they had a contract with Tilley to supply the boxes...

I would assume they were contracted to Tilley. Could have been the MoD of course but I have seen these boxed and sold to other organisations so I guess it had to be Tilley. Incidentally when I can dig it out I have the box that the Blue steel one came in. Quite different because it is designed to hold two lamps for export to East Africa. Must be well buried because I don't remember setting eyes on it for some time. ::Neil::

Yes sorry about that I am used to people knowing but it is a British thing so understadable that people don't. MoD is the Ministry of Defence and they are the guys who purchase for the armed forces. ::Neil::

Thank you. I have been looking for one of these but the local customs make me give up. They usually reach 150 pounds and I discovered this one a little late: Tilley SL 61
