This is a very nice Coleman Milspec dated 1975, it came in it's box and didn't have much use, if ever. The airtubes were slightly corroded so I zinc sprayed them.

Because I was interested in the legendary (better roaring) sound I followed the advice given by Dirk Frieborg and installed an advanced preheating system for hassle free lighting

    Cheers. 8)

Pretty cool lantern. I might have to get me one of those.
I like that spare parts compartment they have in the tank! Clever thing.

I have one of these in slightly used condition. Mine was a pain in the butt to get going. As I recall I had to flush out the generator by pushing fuel through it with the gas tip uninstalled. As for mine I have always fine luck lighting it like my other instant lighting lanterns. These lanterns are more than just a tad noisy though. I'll have give mine some fuel and light it up tonight. Thanks for the post

Hi StephanE, Your Milspec looks in slightly better condition than the one I've just finally got running, I'd a right job releasing the generator seat (spitting cobra), from the lower valve but eventually it gave; so I could then take it apart (from the tank, up), and give it a finer fettle. I didn't want to have it taking water born rust, onboard, over the time I look after it, so I sprayed (after a good w/wool clean, 1st), some clear engine VHT varnish spray, on it all, but masked the full bale arm off. I wouldn't have thought, this'd be regrettable but I will have to try some other rust proofing method, in future, as the varnish was forever messing the polished Globe, with streaks. Too costly getting everything plated again, though. Mine was from ebay.com & the 220B from 1955, Olive Green, just like yours pictured, barring the tool tray component fitting. I just bought the proper spanner for it & gas tip pricker. Sorry not to load a picture, to view, problems now with compressing pic's (a lot to learn, yet!) Watch the yellow flame, bobbing about, just as it's going out, it's like a ghost in slow motion, dipping & rising. Quite a trip, late on. Cheers for posting pics. Very smart. Jon

What mantle did you use, Steve?

Anyone any idea what a "square knot" is? - instruction No.2 in 'Installing a New Mantle'

David, as far as I remember (it's a while ago) I used an Optimus 250cp mantle No. 4.

Thanks, Steve - I've got a Coleman of some sort on mine at the moment and it's sort of OK-ish but probably too small. I think it was the one recommended as well.

Square knot - thanks. We tend to use the term 'reef knot' over here.

Stephan's post inspired me to light up my Coleman Milspec last night. It doesn't have the advanced pre-heating facility but no matter. No images either - sorry - it lasted a few minutes, dimmed and then went out.

It's probably the jet clogged (again! ) and pricking it requires removal of the generator. Not a well-designed lantern in my view... :rage: ](*,)

    Ok. I'll accept that.
But only if the cups are delivered complete with all accessories, i.e. that lower, glassy part with some sort of liquid inside...

German beer will always be my first choice.
Oh, well, perhaps not always... I have a weak spot for some Czhec beers. =P~
