Hi, got the little dude a couple of road lamps to fix up too but one has a green glass broken. Any ideas other then ebay where i could source him a replacement please ??
Is there any indication of the maker? Is and assuming they are still extant, then maybe approach them. Other than that try your local council yard or a road highway depot. I know the modern versions are led but given the countless numbers of these lamps manufactured there must be a good few spares around. Alternatively, use the undamaged lamp as a donor for the time being. It will at least allow junior to start his fettling career.
Chalwyn, I know made some of these. There was another company, too but can't remember their name. I got a couple of these, I think they're construction or signal lamps.
Whats strange is i cant find any the same online as they all have hinged doors yet these both have a door that slides upwards.
Hi Tim The road lamps with green glasses in don't turn up very often if at all, the chance of finding replacement lenses will be remote. I have 2 Chalwyn lamps both with green glasses in and I have spoke to a number of people over the years about their use and purpose. One explanation was they they were intended to highlight a safe area when working in hi voltage substations, or simply they could have just been stop / go lights. Yours don't look like Chalwyn lamps as the lenses are smaller and you have the "less common" slide up door, most road lamps are hinged, the reverse bend on the end of the hook is also unusual, not seen that before and looks too neat to have been done at a later date. Are they any marking or date stamps on either lamp or burner? Kenyon, Greenham, BAT and Chalwyn are the road lamp manufacturers that I'm aware off, but there will been others, all slight variations of each others design, local districts or Corporations would also spec their own designs. Kenyon did make lamps with slide doors, they usually had a brass plate on the burner, well certainly on the early lamps. BAT lamps used the smaller lenses an shown on yours, but they came with a distinctive BAT motif. Nice lamps, if you cant find a green glass you may find a red or clear one as a replacement. If your stripping them down the white glass covers remove from the inside but be careful not to break the metal tabs off. Otherwise give them a spray with WD40 and enjoy them as they are.
As a "youth" - now a distant memory - we used to have all sorts of fun with these. Things were just going batttery then but enough paraffin ones were still in use. Mostly yellow with orange lenses. red ones were very rare and sought after and I must confess to never having seen a green one.
So he is a pretty lucky boy then, looking forward to christmas day now just so i can look for makers marks. brought him some rust remover too lol
