Greeting to all the Followers of the Light Here a fun little story This starts with a good friend of mine turning 50 years young. As I have been smitten by the lamp disease - I thought it wise to give my friend a little darkness chaser as a present - This as I had a spare and we have this wonderful state run entity called LOAD SHEDDING here in sunny South Africa So here is Pete's Gift So a little lesson and Pete was a very happy camper with what he said was the best gift he received On Monday this week my mate send me this - Was clearing out a shed on his farm and happened upon a lamp Well this got my juices flowing as I have not seen one of these I contacted my fellow Fettle Master Phill Botha- Phaedrus - i think is his user name here - Phill please correct me if I am wrong Phill advised that I secure the lamp AT ALL cost So lucky for me - the lamp and the greater watchers out there - My friend stated that he had no use for this and would be happy if I gave him a worker as trade So I raced to my collection and very quickly found a 339 Collection will happen - God willing this Sunday The amazing part of this story is that Phill's lamp and this one Lived very close to each other I will try and find out as much as I can about the Farm - Previous owners etc - I hope to go and see Phill this afternoon as I am pretty sure I can find out more details on his Lamps history - I do know a fair amount of people in the Hermanus and Stanford area that could - Please excuse the pun - "Shed more light into this dazzling story" That folks is the start of the story More details will surely follow after I collect and very gently look at the way forward Lamp Delight Your Fellow "ParrafinAllien" Warwick Beaumont Ps - Please excuse the Organum on the first pic - Peter does like his Pizza
Good Story Warwick, this may start a new gift giving trend, who knows where and what fine lantern could turn up in return, cheers, enjoy that great Coleman, Frank
Actually the count is now 3, as far as I know. This one, the one referenced in CPL by an Australian collector and there is also another one referenced in the Coleman forum (CCF) by a different Australian who bought it in Victoria.
Greetings All The Lamp has been collected Here a few pics pre cleaning on some of the detail as found Phill has advised that before I strip it down I will get the lamp to him that we can compare against his version Here a pic of the embossed Collar Here a pic of the Cap in place where the rapid heater would go - Apologies - Bad pic
Greetings All What a pleasure to share a table with Phill today Not every day one gets the opportunity to compare 3 lamps live in one place Here we had a look at the 3 lamps that are all different but yet the same So have Warwick's 238b vs Phill's 238b vs Phill's 238b "Special" Phill please add your comments if I miss anything My lamp is a 238b that has the collar with the probable overstamped at factory 8B on the Collar - Phills 238B did not have the original collar - Phills Special 238 does not have the Overstamp 8B on the 237 Generator on the collar Differences noticed on the clocking As well as the different Valve stem on the special compared to the 2 regulars Also the Generator fit on the special has a smaller hole to accommodate the 237 Generator - My lamp has been converted by the previous owner with a brass sleeve inserted onto the 237 Generator - Noted that the length is to long to accommodate correct pressure flow into the air stem Connection points for the bail are also different on the special Also the regular has the base plate different to the special Seems the Rapid burner cap was soldered close on my lamp - and the obvious - valve was removed More detailed pics will come when I gently strip down and soak See the Overstamp vs not See Adapted collar on the 237 gennie to fit the larger hole - corrections are needed here as the tip is not fully open - Sleeve is to long Here Phill's Lamp with the large hole for the Correct Gennie Here is the Money Shot for now - Definitely Not every Day that one gets 3 Musketeers at Table together What a Lamping privilege - Thanks Phill Again
Well after an early rise this am The little baby came apart fairly easy without any damages Trusty Svea 155 on duty for the warm bath All in the tub for a little love treatment to remove all the years of grime
Firstly, thanks for the many pictures and comments of this very uncommon lantern type. I have been following these for some time. I am, despite your explanations, still a bit unclear on their status. Have I got this right please: * there are 3 in SA * 2 of them have the straight generator * of those two with the straight generator one is original and one has been modified to fit What I am confused about is really how many of them are genuine 238B lanterns with a genuine straight Coleman generator as original. Since I know of two in Australia that do NOT have the unusual 238B ringed generator. I am trying to know how many to add to the world count of these 'special 238B lanterns' with the ones found in South Africa. Simply are there now 3 or 4 in the world. Hope this makes sense. Regards
Segman - WE were looking at 3 models - 2 are supposed to have the ribbed Gennie - This as the hole in the air tube was big to fit the bigger Gennie When looking at just those 2 - My one has an overstamp on the collar 237 stamped with an 8b - The other did not have original collar - The 3rd is a ponder lamp - this as its complete with the Pre burner but the hole in the breather is smaller to fit a 237 gennie - Plus it does state on the Collar - uses 237 gennie - Hope that makes more sense
