This is an Australian Austramax 3/300 Lantern with a Blue enamel steel cap.
It was corroded, rusty and the glass was missing.
Austramax’s are hard to date but what I can say is
The pressure bleed is brass rather than plastic
The burner (nozzle) has a pressed screen rather than the earlier wire mesh
The control Knob is the later style (not round)
The font is brass with a steel bottom (pre stainless steel)
The handle is the later square shape rather than the earlier type with a rounded profile
The pump piston is an ‘O’ ring design
The gland packing on the spindle was a series of pink fibre washers and a brass washer. I am not sure what the material is but they reminded me of the material I used in the1980’s to make intake manifold gaskets for cars. I replaced the gland packing with graphite.
The vapouriser and needle had no sign of carbon inside.
The lantern was corroded with rust in the base of the font (inside and out). The handle was corroded and seized in the upright position.
After cleaning and treating the rust with phosphoric acid I am pleased with the outcome. At this stage I am using a generic straight glass. As this lantern will be a user it may stay that way.

    Martin

That seems to have cleaned up nicely. It looks pretty good in the photos anyway. :)

It'd be nice to be able to date the Austramax lanterns, but so far I havn't heard of any dates for any of the part variations (except the flame spreader).
