Hi, I have the above lamp and interested in restoring it. The chimney is quite knocked about, do people get them powder coated, enameled, can I do it myself? Thanks in advance, Bryan.
Welcome onboard It would probably be cheaper to find another one in better condition, some members have found places that can re enamel but i don't know of any.
I talked to a company today, explained what I want, they do stove enameling which is only good too 180f,he reckons this is vitrious. He did say he had a paint that would stand up to 500f but only in silver. I don't know how hot these lamps get.. Has anyone measured temp at all?
Hi Bryan, welcome on board! Those hoods really do get HOT! The company you talked to is correct, the enamel is vitrious (grind glass, made into a paste and kinda 're-melted' at high temps) and can stand high temps. I think what the company uses is a lacquer 'enamel' which is baked on at much lower temps (maybe powder coating). Like MG said earlier, it would be cheaper to look out for a better one. Best regards, Wim
Ive had a bialaddin table lamp top powder coated before and it looked quite good, but they recommend you do not run them with a heat source as it will come off eventually. In the long run probably cheaper to invest in new or a good secondhand one. Good luck if you do try to restore
Welcome Bryan. I have read posts where members have measured the hood temperature at 320 C (608 f) up to 450 C (840 f). I suspect different lanterns may vary in temperature.
Yes these are vitrious enamelled and powder coating will not do the job. There are companies that can do the work but with these lamps is is almost not worth the expense since the finish will just flake off like the original has. I suspect this is because the coeficient of expansion of the steel and enamel is different with Bialaddin and Tilley hoods. I have had a few hoods re enamelled and all have been managed by Fred Kuntz in Ohio as a favour to me. Mail costs are not high and US enamel services seem to do a better job but more importantly Fred did the shot blasting to remove the old enamel and any welding repairs before sending the parts to the specialist. ::Neil::
@Bryan Williams I’ve tried all kinds of high temperature paint and none withstand the heat that a lantern hood developes. Cheers Tony
There is a place in Ireland called H&F Enterprises, they offer an enameling service. Was onto them regarding my 1020 hoods but never got around to sending them down.
I guess if there was such a paint, lamp manufacturers would have used it in preference to vitreous enamelling. Tilley certainly would have - no corner left uncut!
