Hi guys, I came across this lamp in Ireland in an antique store and I paid €85 for it about £75. The font wasn’t great and slightly pitted and still is. I’m glad I didn’t just go at it with wire wool as apparently chrome Finnish can be either hard chrome or decorative chrome. The decorative chrome seems to be thinner and less durable than hard chrome. Also I think that the chrome plating process uses different metals which were in short supply during the war years. There was possibly a resurgence of chrome plating in the 50s. It would be a significant undertaking to reproduce this lamp.
Great to see another one of these! still think that was reasonable considering even the price of a glass these days.. will you be getting seals at all ? (available from our sponsor the Fettlebox) the glass that came with it will be good to use to run it rather than risk an original round shouldered one, should you find one :-) best regards pb
Nice find and a bargain price for such a rarity, being a bialaddin fan I've yet to see one of those in the flesh, mine is just a standard painted one.
To be honest I didn’t know what I was looking at when I first saw it and was more interested in a square wick lantern that was for sale in the same shop. I only took notice thanks to this forum. I have a good few lamps but mainly concentrated on hot blast. Thanks for your advice regarding the polish rather than wire wool. It looks really nice now that it’s polished. Not perfect but it is probably 65/70 years old. The pump washer was in fair condition although dried out. So I steeped it in oil overnight. I tried to pressurise the tank and it’s taking some pressure but slowly pushing the pump handle back out. I think the next step is to replace all the washers and I’ve ordered a set from Tilley lamps and stoves, sorry I didn’t realise fettle box was a sponsor.
I didn’t realise it’s rarity only for this forum. I’d never actually seen a T10 before and when I saw it I thought it was a hybrid because the font didn’t match the gallery. I’m delighted with it now though, thanks to this forum and the unselfish advice of its contributors.
