    Here is a Canadian-made Coleman 236 stamped 10/50:

    Note the two "9"s stamped in the cast burner assembly:

    The hood (vent) is badly rusted at the top. The lantern came from a coastal town in Victoria (Aus) and probably suffered from salty air. I will try to find another, but if that fails, I will cut the top part of the hood out and try to reform it with brass sheet.

    The hood had been overpainted with a similar colour green that subsequently burnt off leaving a black coating. It comes off, but I will wait to take the rest off when I decide what I do about the rusty top.

    It lit up first try (after replacing the filler cap washer):

    Here it is set up with a Petromax 500CP mantle, sunny day, outside on the veranda:

    Thanks to Dan (dday) for the mantles:

    The price of Shellite (=Coleman fuel) being what it is in Australia (the cheapest at the moment is $4.50 AUD per litre), I won't be using this lantern regularly, but it will certainly be used when I need a big powerful light.

    Cheers

    Now here's an interesting thing: An Australian "Coleman-Thomas" catalogue from the 1950s has the Coleman 236 listed as the "Empire". It also has the 237 listed as the "Major".

    Empire obviously shows the Australian tie up with Coleman in Canada rather than the US.

    Cheers

    Here is the 236 above, but this time with:

    1. A hood (vent) that is is better shape than the one above;

    2. a replacement globe that is about 1mm shorter than the globe above.This is a good thing as the above globe had to be positioned in a particular way in order to stop the bail catching on the globe when folded down. The new globe is clear of the bail in all positions; and

    3. a Petromax "Superior" 500CP mantle.

    All of the above were kindly supplied by dday.
