Does such a glass size comparison chart exist?
Has anyone started a spreadsheet on the subject?

I went around my outstanding projects last night, and apart from my P1020 there didn't seem to be any readily available glasses advertised/available for them.

I've measured approx sizes and was planning phoning Basecamp to pester them but thought I would ask here first....

I think it would be a worthwhile exercise to start a spreadsheet! Hytta.de has been of some help.

    Alec.

I have not heard of such a document.

I’ve not heard of such a beast, either... but I’ve thought about it, because I’ve been on the hunt for obscure glasses (eg for Australian Gloria lanterns).

It’s a complex and multi-dimensional set of measures:

    Shape: cylinder; bulge; etc

Length; Width; and in some cases inside and outside diameter.

Then there are the oddities like the hanging lamps.

Some manufactures’ lamps (eg Coleman, Primus, Radius) could have been done already, or will be relatively easy to do. Others will require a fair bit of work.

But I think a good first cut might be to ask Members, by a pinned thread, to contribute to a first-cut of a data base. We could start a “Post your glass size here” thread where we could ask Members to clearly identify: Make; Model; Year (period); Glass Dimensions; Photo.

It would also helpful to include glass dimensions when posting lamps and lanterns in the Reference Gallery.

I like the idea of adding the dimensions in the Reference Gallery. Good thinking, Tony.

What about shades? Someone did make a suggestion some time ago that we should have a separate section for shades. I would definitely like to see that.

I agree, Jean. But shades are an even more complex beast as they were often made by other companies than the lamp manufacturer. None the less, putting known shade dimensions in with a lamp in the Reference Gallery is a good start.

    Cheers

In revisiting this thread, I like your idea of having a distinct section in the Reference Gallery for lamp shades.

    Cheers

That would be a very handy reference to have available, not just for dimensions but also the availability of replacements when you have a match.
I have a few lamps I need to 'find' a glass for and finding something would probably speed up the fettling process.

    Now that’s a thought. I’ll second that.

Would it be useful to include Shade Carriers/Holders?...Or not?

A lot of our members collect lamps and for them I'm sure a section on shades would be great! (Right, Jean?).
Could point out that lantern manufactures as a rule did not produce their own globes. Coleman, for example, relied on Pyrex for their globes. Petromax and Aida relied on Schott and Putzler (Indifferent).
    My worn two cents worth.

Aye aye George, that would be great then I could drool over all the shades I could never hope to own as well as the lamps they’re on.

There could be a special section “Blue Lamp Shades of the World”.

This is a splended idea. I have some information to share but with an ordinary post it will probably disappear among others.
I believe most members has a lamp missing the glass or shade.
If we are able to create a list for all models and information with measures etc. would be great.

    Has this idea progressed?

There are charts around showing Coleman globes or Globes that fit this or that but they do not always give sizes, (some do), which should be especially easy for cylinder globes. The advantage of seeing a chart that says something like this (for example) cannot be overstated:
    3.5" W * 4.25" H (Coleman ABCD1234, Vapalux XYZ89) [Straight cylinder]
    3.5" W * 4.50" H (Primus 2345, Handi 4567) [Straight cylinder]

Obviously with metric measurements as well.

Would allow you to go down the chart and find out if something existed or was close.

I am chasing 120mm W by 140mm H globe and looking at sellers charts that show 18 different codes for a make are useless. I know a few charts that exist for a specific brand do include sizes like I have indicated and they are great if you are chasing that brand. The idea discussed in this thread is definitely worth pursuing and I am happy to assist.

    Thanks
