    Hi Guys.
Just displaying my latest addition. Got this in a car boot sale and decided " IT SHALL NOT PASS "
( if you know, you know ).

    From this ....... 4.jpg

    To this......
    16.jpg

Kinda liked the patina on the handle and decided not to paint it.
Also black was the only paint in my Halfords paint larder.
You can have it any colour you want, as long as its Black......Henry Ford

A bit unconventional but if it didn't work out it could be undone.
Kinda liking the result though to be honest.

Couldn't wait for pump cup leathers to arrive in the post, so I read up on DIY cup leathers on CPL and had a go myself.

This is a half inch blank and an allen bolt....

    12.jpg
Soaked the leather and left it in the vice over night to dry ....... 13.jpg

An old army issue boot worked a treat.

Cleaned out the vape with usual heat and quench, using a socket to protect the threads on the vape and tapping hard on the vice....

And so my collection grew a little......
Here it is in all its glory.

Looks fantastic mate, I also have a black X246, and love the colour. I also love the wingnut pump.

@JonD 10 outta 10 for observation. I had two or three of these on the bench at the same time and had to do a bit of zooming in on the pics. I must have inadvertently switched cages.
    (Shhhh ! dont tell a soul. )

@BigStevie Thanks, only other enthusiasts know the work that goes into these ...

But also the satisfaction of getting a lamp like this up and running again.

The wife said " that's nice, did you put out the bins yet "

    Well, done.
Some people scream if you don't keep it original colour or original parts.
I believe it should be working. It's your lamp, have what ever colour you want.
Re cage restoration, I find a simple bit of home electrolysis works well. It's gets all the rust out of crannies and corners.
A tall plastic bucked and the anode down the center of the cage works well.
After this a quick wire wool and some hammerite K,rust can be over painted.

@SeanTilly Thanks for the kind comments. The raw metal with its aged look on the handle really appeals to me. So this electrolysis voodoo has sparked an interest in me that I will have to get around to learning.

Looks like another night on youtube so.......

By the way, thats a fine looking lamp on your profile pic.

    Thanks.
Re electrolysis. It's easy. All you need is an old style basic car battery charger, a couple of crocodile clips, a plastic bucket, some scrap bits of mild steel flat bar. Soda crystals (not bicarbonate) and water.
Check out Dominic Chimea on YT.
The guardsman in my pic was gifted to me by a work colleague. It had been stood in the garage for 40 years, previously very well used for camping.
I painted the cage after 3 lots of electrolysis and cleaning then hammerite krust with heat resistant gold enamel. Polished the tank then lacquered with heat resistant clear lacquer. New seals. Unfortunately the original hood needs re enameling. I've painted it for now but run it with a black hood. The vaporiser was too worn or had suffered corrosion near the jet hole and burned with a yellow flame stack. I've had to fit a modern Tilley vaporiser which does burn fine. Everything else was cleaned and repaired.
I think the guardsman is best looking latern. I don't think I'll ever take it camping. Certainly not with the original Durosil glass in it.
At the moment I'm trying to find the fault with a pulsing 1990 Tilley, un used out of the box. All seals replaced, springs etc. it's trying my patience.

@SeanTilly...........I had a go at that electrolysis malarky, and sure enough it worked a treat. I will be using that again on future projects.

The guardsman looks like it came out of the shop yesterday. Great work !

Any time I have a problem with a lamp CPL is my first port of call. I've spent days trawling through these pages and have never been disappointed. If I can't find the answer I just ask and there is always some one who knows how to fix or work around the problem. They are a great bunch of guys.

I'm sure you're pulsating problem's remedy is on here somewhere.
