    Hi all,
    New here- hoping post a bit as I have a growing collection of pressure lamps to fettle: couple of Tilley X246's, 59 Tilley Guardsman, Coleman 220k, Handi Keropet and an Akron.
    Thought I'd post my 'as found' Keropet of which I know very little!
    I'm sure I'll have plenty of dumb questions!
    Cheers Gunzelgram

    @Gunzelgram , welcom to the group and do ask away, we all like to give help and share information, great Handi, its an older one you can tell by the burner frame feet, the screw to the plate. You may have a copper tank as well.

    The Handi lantern is a top performer and when fettled, restored, will give years of faithful service.

    Thanks for all the fast responses.

    I've always found Lantern people to be extremely helpful in sharing expertise.

    When the time comes, do you have any reccomendations for where to source the parts for the Handi? (Is that allowed on here?) I've seen plenty of places on Ebay for Tilleys but guessing for Aussie lanterns I might be better off looking local.

    Thanks Darryl, haven't had a close look yet but the fount seems to have silver patches where worn- could it have originally been plated? Not magnetic so definitely brass or copper under. I'm always cautious before polishing, would not want to remove an original finish.

    @Gunzelgram , Handi's are all model 3, or type/versions 3. Handi's very earlier where AGM,
    have a lok ing the lantern gallery, you will see plenty of diffetent versions.
    Tip, do take extra care with the pricker needle, you will not get a new or reproduction, take care of the globe, when you get to fettle, the NRV, ( non return valve) the pip, if you have the skill sets to replace it good, but other than that you can get NRV kit from the fettle box, they are excllent quality and price,
    The badge on the collar, if its red its a kerosene lantern, if its blue its shellite, or inside the generator if its a curly steel spring type thing its kero, if its s fine brass mesh its shellite.
    The tank, not all things need to be shiney like new, sure clean everything up but keeping the original look is still very appealing , they are a favorite lantern of mine, i have afair few in my collection, i have fettled back to life.
    Enjpy your handi.

    Welcome to the forum.

    The original finish on most Handis is nickel plated. The tanks on most of them were made of brass with a steel base but there are a few that were made of copper. Probably just a single batch when they couldn't get the right brass, but nobody knows. Some people find them more desirable.

    Thanks Darryl. Interesting you should say they used to be AGM, as before I bought it and wasn't familiar with Handi's that is what I thought it may be.

    I've got a feeling this one might be ready to run once I get a mantle, which is good because I have ZERO skills (in pressure stuff). The badge is a bit of a coppery/ tarnish brass colour and says something about the brand of kero they recommend...guess that means it's kero.

    I quite like the coppery colour of the fount, but the patches where the nickel shows through let it down unfortunately. Might take it back to brass, although that might make me quite unpopular!

    Nils I've done some exploration and it seems I've got the brass version. What confuses me though, is it seems to have a very thin layer of something bronzy over the nickel, but in places that has worn thin and the nickel is showing through. Or, the nickel showing is the last remaining slivers and the 'bronze' is just the brass tarnished...but places it's worn don't seem to fit that explanation. Either way I've got 3 colours!

    @Gunzelgram

    Your label says “We Recommend Pennant Kerosene”. Therefore you can be quite sure it’s kerosene lantern.

    You will probably need new seals and to oil the leather pump cup at the minimum.

    Cheers

    :-k Excuse my ignorance here but how can a Handi Keropet made in Brisbane, Queensland be "All British"? ](*,)

    @David Shouksmith

    You have to imagine the pink bits on the map, and the “Dominions beyond the Seas”.

    Further, this is Queensland! Some parts have not yet left the Empire.

    Therefore, anything made in Queensland has to be British.

    Now don’t get me started about the illogical use of British to mean from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland!

    Cheers

    Tony

    Left the “Empire”?
    What is this you talk of Tony?

    Such blasphemy ......=;

    In Australia there’s 2 types of people, Queenslanders and those who want to be!

    Thanks Tony, yes no doubt when I get around to it I'm best changing all the seals to be sure of it.
