Hi all and greetings. I am new here... I have collected tilleys for many years and to my amazement l found this at my families home. It is original. It has the booklet, funnel, spare parts, including washers in the original packets. Is my guess as to the model correct ? I will post some more pics soon. It has a stamp on the base rim. Rd 681681 . Cheers.
Welcome to CPL Bluegate. Nice lantern. Does it have a bleed screw in the fount? To me it looks like an EX100. Early one with the long bale mounts. Is the hood white inside? Tilley is normally white. The mottled hood could be from a Kayen (especially if the inside of the hood isn't white)
thanks. The inside of the hood is black. It doesn't have a bleed screw. The pump and vapouriser tube knob both have Tilley written on them.
G'day Bluegate, good bit of documentation you have there. Are there any diagrams within included? As I understand it, the EX4 had the control cock soldered into the fount, it looks like yours has a washer under the cock. In my opinion this is what you have Tilley EX100 with XN control cock. Regarding the hood I haven't seen a speckled Tilley hood but Kayen did Kayen AP2 Blue Speckled Hood Others may be able to comment on this.
Having a removable handle and an XN control cock makes it a good score. They went from XN to GF in 1940 and the removable handle was very soon after in 1940. The hood is a Kayen. Does it have a pressure pip ??? @ROBBO55, don't doubt yourself, you know your right.
Welcome, @Bluegate. I agree with @ROBBO55. I would say it’s a Tilley EX100 with an XN control cock and a Kayen hood (Tilley didn’t do speckle). The hood is probably younger than the rest of the lantern. The burner buttons looks like Tilley, so I’d say it is either a mid-1940s cobble by a dealer, or the hood was replaced at some stage (mid-1940s onwards). The EX 100 is 1940 to 1946. Cheers Tony Edit: Crossed with @Anthony
It's not uncommon to see Kayen parts on a Tilley lamp in Australia, due to the import restrictions of the time. Kayen parts also my have been easier and cheaper to get at the time as well. I have seen hundreds of mixed Tilley lamps over the years mostly EX100 Tilley and AP2 Kayen lamps. After saying that you have a perfect lamp there especially the fount being an XN type style. Great find by the way.
Hi all, thankyou so much for your replies. Your consensus makes sense ! I have found a reference to the XN control in the instruction booklet. I will look into it further but the booklet is quite brittle so l wi do it when l have the time to be suitably careful with it. The lamp was definately my father's, as there is his writing on a few of the other bits and pieces. He must have bought it as quite a young man and just not used it ever since. There is straw packing and newspaper in the cardboard box it was in and l found a corner of the front page of the herald dated 1944. The spare vapouriser tubes still wrapped in wax paper, soldered tin funnel, and pinch type pre heater all look to me to be of the same era. I will have to get out my other 6 Tilley lamps and 2 Tilley heaters and post them for your comments. Your collective knowledge is wonderful.
@Bluegate It's a good looking lantern and a great bit of family history to have. Keep an eye out for the reflector that goes with the lantern, it might also have been tucked away for safe keeping.
Robbo re reflector...my thoughts exactly. It wouldn't have fit in the old " Vulcan tyres" box that the lamp was in , so may well be sitting in the cupboard . .. it's going to be a long wait until Christmas till l get back there Thanks JJ and JJ.
@Bluegate , Im sure you have a Kayen hood, the air buttons are different to Tilley ,your reflectors are not Kayen, check your vaporiser if it has a crossed knerled grip it’s Kayen, if it is vertical knerled it’s Tilley, I hope this helps
Thanks BL. Pity, l found these at a friends place today with a Tilley heater and a couple of Kero blow torches. Pure coincidence, as l was here for other work. I did for a second think there was a Tilley god .
Here are some better photos of the correct reflector for a EX100 Tilley. After checking I don't think the two reflectors that you have will fit a Tilley X246, as my photos will show. The first is like yours and the inside diameter is too small. They will fit but not properly I think they are Aladdin?, someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Now Tilley reflector on top of other reflector is to see the size difference. The last 2 photos are the correct reflector. I hope that helps you out.
Yep Perfect. They where in a box with a whole pile of bits..including some more modern , fixed wall mount gas lighting ( lpg) .. so as much as l am disappointed, l guess it was only a very slim chance. I will double check tmmrw and see if there is any Aladdin parts in there.
@Bluegate When you get a chance, can you take some detailed photos of the burner inside the hood and the air buttons, please. Cheers Tony
