I dropped in to a junk shop in Canberra and found this (plus a spare 1940s Tilley vaporiser and some mantles) for a very good price.

The lamp is in very good condition, hasn't been fired for a long time and has obviously been a "display item' somewhere. It needs new seals and washers but it otherwise fine.

    It has a 182 globe.

The reflector has been painted with house paint.

I will get it up and running; keep the fount as is except to protect the existing paint with VHT clear (baked); and I will try and find the original reflector colour under the house paint (although I do like the post-WW2 green used on it - it reminds me of my childhood).

The top of the reflector on one of the Kopsen-Kayens I have was a green close to matching the enamel hood colour (Original paint) I believe at least some Kayens reflectors were colour matched to burner hood colour. 'Graham'

Two of the steel tank AP2's I have had shades that were a faded version of the same green as the tank. Unfortunately my brass AP2 doesn't have a shade.

That's a very nice lamp Tony and I for one would leave that lovely shade of green.

    I've fettled the (above) Kayen.

I kept the original paintwork on the tank by overcoating with VHT High Temperature paint, baked at 94C for an hour.

I stripped and repainted the reflector with Holt's automotive Dupli-color "Aurora White" enamel (underneath) and "Tropicana Green" on top.

The most complete Kayen decal I've seen:

I didn't pull the burner apart as it was very clean and the air tubes were locked tight to the burner, and the air buttons locked tight to the air tubes. I thought best left as is, so I gave it a good clean out with carburettor cleaner.

Note that it is fitted with one of the curved top insect screens (is this a Kayen product that Tilley didn't make?):

Both the handle locking nut and the handle itself are brass. All my other Kayens have steel handles.

I'll post a picture when I light it tonight.

I have only one Kopsen AP2 in brass and it has brass handle and nuts like yours. Maybe this was standard for Kopsen. I don't have a nettlefold AP2 so can't comment on them.

Nice restoration btw and it's good to see a complete Kopsen decal. It would be nice if there were some reproductions made of the various Kayen decals.

Nils, I checked my other Kopsen Kayen and, with the help of my Dremel, I discovered that the handle is indeed brass.

I had just assumed it was steel like the Nettlefold Kayen I had restored earlier:

Tony, I'm 99% sure the top of the vaporiser will unscrew from the bottom. Good to give it a good clean up.

Aahh... Not the vaporiser in this case: the burner at its top end. I ran the lamp for a couple of hours and then shook the $@&! out of it to make sure there were no wasps... It's going well, now.
