This copper Kopsen Kayen AP2 is from the collection of Jim Dick. I have kept it as I received it, except for the fitting of a Kayen vitreosil globe. Jim must have gone to some lengths in restoring this lantern. The reflector, lower insect screen and bail have been copper plated; the green reproduction hood has been fitted (then fired) with screw-in fittings to hold the glass (rather than using a wire stirrup as in the Tilley EX100/Kayen AP2); and the control cock has been chrome plated. Up and running (with a different hood). @presscall commented on the similarity to the EX100 (of which the AP2 is a copy). Here are some of the most obvious differences that this Kopsen version of the Kayen AP2 has with the Tilley EX100. 1. The burner is different (see below) 2. The vapouriser has diamond knurling on the brass. 3. The locking nut on the bail is a different shape (longer, more rounded) than Tilley. 4. The pump has no markings, different knurling, and sometimes different threads and shapes of components. 5. The ears on the bail are a different shape to Tilley 6. The nut on the tank for the bail stud is hex not round. 7. Kopsen tanks have a different profile at the base than Tilley This configuration of Kayen burner is found on some Kayens. This burner is the same as on the Kayen in this post. 1. The mixing dome has no patent stamping and no knurled ring. 2. The spigot is formed from the same brass stock, not screwed into the burner. Depending on the Kayen lamp/lantern there are many other differences to Tilley, especially incompatible threads. These differences are not consistent across Kayen products, even of the same model. This lantern is quite a treasure. Cheers Tony
@Tony Press Thanks for taking the trouble to point out those differences Tony. I’ve enjoyed running through the comparison check-list against my Tilley, the steel-font version. John
Very nice AP2 @Tony Press Thank you for detailing the differences between the Tilley and Kayen versions, it’s very informative. Cheers Pete
