The 20th CCS/CPL Annual UK Gathering - Newark

    7-9 June 2024*

You are welcome to join us for the annual gathering at Smeatons Lakes, Newark, Nottinghamshire.
Collectors of stoves, pressure lamps & blowlamps are all welcome. Please bring along some of your collection for display! It is also a great opportunity for swaps & trading with other collectors!

Originally a weekend event, many people now arrive early. The field is booked from the Wednesday at our special rate. Please come along even if it's for the Saturday night.
No need to book but if possible drop me a PT to let me know you're coming so I have a rough idea of numbers.

Cost is £8.50 (tbc**) per night per tent, caravan or campervan. Extra tents or gazebo's housing displays are free.

We look forward to seeing you there!

More info: DO NOT BOOK IN at reception. Please just pop in to reception & tell them you are attending the lamp & stove rally & they will likely point you in the right direction. I will collect the pitch fees during the event. They will also give you a key code for the barrier.

There is a height restriction barrier which is closed around 8pm, preventing high vans or caravans entering or leaving the site. If it is closed you will need to park up elsewhere until the following morning. It may be possible to come to some arrangement with the warden so if this is an issue give the site a ring. Normal vehicles are not affected.

The normal rate for the site is £24-26 per night for 2 people with a car. Our discount rally rate of £8.50 (tbc) per night per tent, caravan or campervan does not include use of the main toilet & shower block. We do have access to the basic mens & womens portakabin toilet close to the rally field which is just toilet & sink. Also the Anglers toilet as in previous years. If you wish to use the showers in the main block by reception there is a fee to pay (£1 I think). The shower block uses a numerical key entry system. In the past some people have paid their fee & passed the number around. This has upset the site manager & as a result you may find they open the door for you rather than giving you the code. If we are trusted again this year please respect the system & pay the fee otherwise it may be difficult to secure the venue or goodwill in future years.

We are also asked to keep dogs on leads & not allow them to foul the rally field - obviously accidents do happen in which case you are respectfully asked to clean up after your dog. The site provide a dog walk area.

Please bring a bin bag or two & dispose of your rubbish in the skips provided or take it home. There are no recycling facilities on the site I'm aware of.

There is fishing available on site but it needs to be booked in advance.

There are no hookups on the rally field.

    No ball games on field.

TRADERS - For Trade application please contact me by private conversation or txt me your email address & message to send forms to zero7766 zero38612

*Despite booking for next year a whole year in advance our normal weekend had already been booked by a large rally & left no room for us. For 2024 only we are a week later than normal. I have agreed a rolling booking with the site for 2025 onward for the usual first weekend after the 2nd May bank holiday. 2025 dates are 31 May to 2 June.

**The nightly rate for 2023 was £8.50. Hopefully this will hold for 2024 but may be subject to a small increase.

Sadly I won't be there this year as I can't make those dates, but definitely plan to be back for 2025. For anyone here who hasn't been before, I'd definitely recommend popping along. It's a really enjoyable weekend and Emma and I will miss being there...

Fingers crossed you have great weather.

We won't be able to make it either as it clashes with Tractorfest at Newby Hall (Ripon, N.yorks.).

Sorry to hear that. We're back to our normal date from 2025 with a rolling booking going forward.

I was planning to do Friday and Saturday this year but now have a meeting I don't want to miss on the Saturday and a tradesman I had booked from the following Monday (10th) is now set to come on the previous Thursday (6th) instead. Bah!

I'll now probably have a drive down on the Friday, for the day only, with a few lamps and lanterns which need new owners. Let me know, please, if there's anything you'd like me to bring otherwise it'll be just whatever comes to hand... :D

Late arrivals. There is no warden available. To save disturbing the owner by phone the barrier code is 2305. If the height restriction barrier is closed & your in a high vehicle or caravan please call me on 07766038612. If no reply walk down up to the rally field & find me & I can let you in.

I'd like to join in on Saturday if that's OK. I'm very much a newbie, having only started collecting 2 years ago, although I remember pressure lamps being used in the 1970s when Britain was crippled by strikes and electricity blackouts. Nostalgia and curiosity led me to pick up a rather rusty Tilley X246B from a car boot sale. Not surprisingly, it didn't work. Undeterred, I bought a few more paraffin-powered lamps and stoves. Then discovered this forum and other resources on the internet which helped me get a couple of items working again.
So far I have 1 working Tilley X246B (+2 non-working) and 1 working Primus 96 pressure stove, plus a working Valor 64c cooker and Aladdinique heater, both wick-type. Currently non-working Bialaddin bowl fire, Bialaddin 300X lamp, Primus blowtorch. I hope this is enough to qualify for entry to the rally. I'd also really like to get the Bialaddin bowl fire working again (no fuel comes out of the vapouriser). Will there be any fettling taking place?

Another excellent event and thanks to all for attending and for your friendship and good humour. Special thanks to Ross of course for making it all possible.

I was in all honesty fully into being ‘in the moment’ with my companions to find time to take many photos, but here’s a few.

Beer for the duration, upstaging my Buflam/Tilley and Optimus/Tilleystove/lamp convertibles.

Me grinning like I’ve already started to consume them and selfie with a tipsy slant in the best real ale shop in Newark. Richard the proprietor watching indulgently.

Mike, who I first met last year, combined attendance with his other hobby of collecting USA manufactured cast iron woodworking machinery and picked up a WWII era Walker Turner bandsaw brought over for D-day preparations.

Posed there with just the motor and mount, the whole of this occupied most available space in his Peugeot.

Steve had a wry sense of humour to have this rubbing shoulders with a site full of fiery things.

A Pigeon wine cellar lamp if I’m not mistaken, Stesco and Svea 123R in shot.

Steve’s cooking arrangements are impressive …

… with a Rippingilles paraffin oven on hand for his soufflés.

Steve’s immediate neighbour Wayland camps in grand style.

Stepping into his museum-quality exhibit is evocative of being invited into a gentleman’s study from bygone times.

    A well-groomed fellow …

… and well-prepared for all eventualities with an enamelled-ware ‘goesunder’.

lamp display.jpg lampies at night.jpg night display.jpg carbide lamp.jpg carbide lamp prescall.jpg Wow! I attended the gathering for the first time. I was amazed by the displays and by how friendly and welcoming everybody was, considering I didn't know anyone beforehand.

Special thanks to Ted for putting the fire back into my Bialaddin bowl fire and Simon for supplying the spare part it needed, Jeremy for making me feel welcome and of course Ross for organising the event. Hopefully I'll be back again.

Only minor issue: somewhere along the way I've lost one of the pan support legs from the Primus 96 stove which I brought along, and an envelope containing some Fettlebox washer kits and a Bialaddin bowl fire nameplate. If anybody found these, please let me know.

Those lamps on that table look brandnew. Gorgeous :)

Any action pictures of what was cooking on petroleum stoves?
