Made in Zimbabwe by Optimus Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd.

This lantern is not mine and these are the only photos I have so far (taken by someone else, published with permission).

I post it here for reference, due to its place of manufacture.

Intriguing! But was it actually fabricated, or assembled in Zimbabwe?
If Optimus were contemplating cheaper production near their (remaining) market(s) I suppose they developed that idea in the times of Rhodesia under Ian Smith rather than the country run by Mugabe.
Either way, is Africa the latest area in which to mine classic lamps?

The Optimus Zimbabwe connection post-dates Rhodesia.

Optimus Zimbabwe was established in 1982. I’m not sure when it closed, but I will find out. The manufacture of lamps was later than stoves.

If you want to explore more about the Optimus production in Zimbabwe, there's a lot posted at CCS.
Just search for Zimbabwe, and most will be about Optimus.

Thank you Christer. I now understand the presence of any Optimus-related activity in Zimbabwe was politicly motivated rather than an economic expansion by the company.
A form of foreign aid by the swedish government with a modest impact if any.

Why do you say "I now understand the presence of any Optimus-related activity in Zimbabwe was politicly motivated rather than an economic expansion by the company"?

Because this is what I read in some of the material I found under 'Zimbabwe' on CCS.

I now understand that the establishment of “Optimus Zimbabwe” was, indeed, a joint venture with the Swedish Government through its “Swedfund”.
