A couple month ago I bought a Petromax 835 in bad condition. The vaporizer was "exploded" and the rest looks also bad. So I had a little bit to do... The Tank was painted newly, the other steel-parts were new enamaled. A friend of me helps to repair the vaporizer(no image).
Well done Leo. A fine old lady was brought back to life. It looks stunning I always did love these hanging Petromaxes and one fine day I will get one. You just moved that day closer Claus C
Grusse aus Irland!! I love these lamps and you did a great a job. Moge die beste mannschaft gewinnen heute abend!
Sehr schön, Herr Leo! I'm just wondering how the vaporizer can blow off this way... I never saw something similar! Beste Grüße, Martin
G,,day . very nice !!!!! I like it are the forceps hanging on it for a reason ??? or are the left there after the operation that brought it back to life ?? cheers kerry
The forceps clamps an acupuncture needle for cleaning the jet during the start. It's a common tool for german Hanginglamp owners .
thanks mate . it makes sense now . i have use a pair for the same thing , just never left them on the lantern . but i don't own a hanging lantern . cheers , kerry
Hey Leo The lamp looks very bright. How many CP is it and how big is it in size compared to the 834 ? Claus C
Thank you und Danke I'm still absolutly happy about the lamp. I use her now for a couple of days/nights and there were absolutly no problems. Just at the preheatercup the enamel losts a little bit. probably it's the hotest part of a hanging lamp. Best wishes Leo
Hello Leo I’ve just bought a Petromax 835, and it’s my first Petromax lamp. I wonder if you might help me with a few points please? Firstly, will a mantle for an HK500 fit the 835 ? Secondly, is there anywhere I can find information on renovating the lamp? Sorry to be a nuisance, but I’d dearly love to get this super old lamp going again. In hope, with best wishes, Andrew
Hello Andrew, welcome to the forum. In answer to your first question, yes, a 500HK mantle is eminently suitable. Second question, I'm not sure but there are plenty of members here who are willing to help. It's a long time since I restored my 835 and I didn't know many other collectors but having already fettled a few lamps and lanterns, I understood how they worked so I proceeded with caution. Using wire wool, I cleaned off the loose dirt from all the nuts, bolts and screws and soaked them overnight in penetrating oil which worked on most but not all. Heat & quench helped loosen most of the stubborn fasteners but not all where accessible and two or three had to be sacrificed. Don't think that because your lamp was made in Germany, all the screws etc. have a metric thread. You will find e.g. 5/32 Whitworth. Henry.
Many thanks Wim The numbers on the diagrams seem a touch confusing, but I’m pressing on regardless. Many thanks Andrew
@Tive A friend of mine bent a new coil and soldered it with silver solder. With my Continental lamp I then tried it myself. It worked.
