I've lusted after a Primus 1001 for a few years now. I even bought a fairly scruffy one on ebay from Sweden, but the seller never shipped it and eventually I managed to get a full refund. Then on Saturday morning a friend sent me a photo of one and asked whether I wanted to buy it. I drove the 30 miles to his shop immediately and came away with this: It is marked AC which translates to 1938. Some knucklehead had actually cut the cage top ring with a side cutter in order to force a Coleman 660 globe in there! I spent the rest of the weekend giving it a decent fettle and a bit of a facelift. Then only did I discover that none of the globes I had on hand would work! Devised a quick and dirty plan to use a Coleman 220 size globe by putting three spacers under it to provide a bit of ventilation.
Thanks, Nils. No, still awaiting stock so I used an old-stock thorium Peerless 111 that I cut the bottom off and tied with some salvaged mantle string. It is maybe just a little too low but works well anyway. Scary what fogas want for a 130x130 glass though!
Great fettle there Phil! Will you be able to get a glass later that is wide enough? ...i know if its too high that wont be a problem for you though? I also think this lamp is going to shine quite a bit in the nights to come? best wishes, pb
I'm hoping to find something suitable in SA. Perhaps even a piece of lab pyrex that I can cut to length
The glass should be 135x130. You don't want it to rattle too much in the frame. I wouldn't worry about the mantle being too low. The DT-140 I have on a 1015 is even lower.
Difficult to find that size glass globe, but Fred Kuntz can set you up with a really nice Mica one. The lantern looks really great with one of those micas from Fred.
