Hi All, Found this lamp today, Coleman 158 with original shade and glass. I see there aren't any on the gallery so this may be the first to go up. But first I want to clean it up and get it firing. So a couple of questions. What is suggested as a good way to clean up the shade. My first thoughts is cotton buds and warm soapy water? And secondly I am guessing this is a kero lamp given the pre heat cup. I only own one other table lamp so not an expert on these. How many pumps would I give for priming?
Great find with the glass and shade intact! The shade is paper laminated with plastic inside and outside. It is very fragile, especially at the edges and can easily delaminate. A soft damp cloth with a very little warm soapy water can be used to carefully wipe off the plastic outer and inner surfaces, taking care not to get the paper on the edges wet. The fuel cap seems to be missing the thumbscrew valve part. You could also use an aftermarket schrader valve fuel cap. How many pumps would depend on what pump you will be using You can give it roughly the same pressure as a Tilley. They run quite well on low to moderate pressure and have a remarkably short preheat time.
If you decide to use white gasoline or Coleman Fuel, for safety, please make sure your fuel cap is complete, with a good seal and the positive shutoff thumbscrew valve part. If you use fresh clean paraffin, the R55 gen. will still last for several hundreds of hours burn time, and they can be cleaned out to some extent.
Thanks Phil, good spotting on the valve screw. I actually hasent paid that too much attention yet. On quick glance I thought it was complete. I was still taken aback by finding this with a shade.... As hideous as they are Hahahaha.
I know just what you mean. I also found found this hideous old shade the other day to fit my Evening Star lamp.
...Beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder... Speaking for myself.... Wow !!! Very nice Lamps !!! You must remember at that time it was the Head of the household choosing the shade/lamp, not mere men... When you light the lamp that lovely glow will change everything ...
Peerless 2C-HG of course! Or Coleman 21A. If the mantles are any bigger you run the risk of charring the valve wheel (and your fingers)
Great thanks. Shade cleaned up well. Pretty good condition considering its age. String is intake, no surface rust on frame. Plastic in good condition. The bottom is a bit rough and ther is a bit of staining but over all I would say very good condition. Going to post in the gallery
....You probably know already, but I didn't.... ..Your Shade is called .....'Sunshine'.... How cool is that?... ...A Sunshine shade on a Sunshine lamp !
