I assume this lamp is made by Succes, based on the the resemblance of the tank to e.g. this heater: 41041[/ATTACH]
Thanks Neil looks close enough. I see "essence" which is good news as I have a burner I can use for this. One problem I have is some vandal has chopped the base out completely, even grinding it flush to the walls of the tank
...Was it a steel base (originally) ??? ... Shame... ... ....And I was thinking.... ...."Actually it doesn't look like a 'Wreck' to me"...?
Nope brass. Here's whats left of it Any of you blacksmith types know how to make a replacement base plate? Can I fold a lip on a brass plate using a hammer and dolly or do I need to use a swager?
Hi James Could this be a suggestion to your lovely lamp? Interesting part starts 1 minut in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsGVPUGMPXM Claus C
...Hi James, Easier if you have a swager or know of one you can use/practice on, but No, you don't need one....What are your Tinsmithing skills like?..
Hi James What O/D of plate are you looking at ? (Tricky to work out from what I see, as it's doesn't look concentric ) How much of a lip are you looking at ? Is it a flat, concave or convex bottom ?
Hi all Yes Succes gasoline lamp (i think a baby Succes) But I have absolutely no idea of the burner type. the bottom is usually brass made
I cut out a disc out of some scrap copper sheet to measure the O/D. The disc is 149mm in diameter and is a little snug. There is one bit that doesn't quite fit but I think the tank rim may be deformed a little where a hole has been drilled. I think 148mm would be about right. The lip is 8mm. No idea about the bottom but I assume flat will be ok.
What angle for the lip ? 90 degrees would be to much aye ? What you reckon, 70 degrees lip from flat @ 8mm long ?
It's an 8mm lip, not sure about the angle, 70deg would probably be ok. The rim has splayed out a bit when I unrolled it.
So it should be 90 degrees then ? If I make it 90 will you be able to return that lip on your tank to 90 with the new bottom in it ? If not, maybe 70 will have to suffice and solder it in as is your choice James
Can't do anything for couple of weeks though I'm afraid, but should be able to sort that if you can wait a bit I'm away next week for a break and got some bits to do when I return for the week after that, is that ok ? If you sort something out in the meantime, then let me know before I start anything ok
Hi James! That's interesting that you used a burner off a gas lamp..thanks for the link, good reading!)... Did you decide to just have a go with it???.. I see from your other fettling exploits you have used gas burner parts before??..
....So would I be right in thinking the Gas burner from the [/u]age of it would have been Town Gas?... ..Or is that just tooo obvious ???...
The tank with the new base soldered in: And the rim folded-over (this was the hardest part): I added a vapourising coil to the burner to improve the burn with liquid fuel: It works:
