    This speculum plated BR 49 was found in Australia.
    It has the Tilley and Owl marking on the fount but no date stamping. The bottom is stamped “Made in England” with possibly “O” above England.

    Tilley began marking the founts in '54 and began date marking in November 1956. So this undated example is from 1954 to Oct '56.

    The cage was badly rusted and has been repainted.

    The BR49 has beautiful plating.:clap:

    The BR49 I own doesn't have a metal mesh around the ventilator, but yours does.
    What is it for?

    @Camp numao

    That is the top insect screen to stop insects coming in and breaking the mantle.

    There is a bottom insect screen sitting underneath the globe, clipped on to the vapouriser.

    Cheers

    @Tony Press

    Thank you for letting me know.

    I also have the insect guard plate on the preheat cup side, but I didn't know that the ventilator also had such a part.

    Jolly nice. These are my favourite lanterns bar none. I'm turning all the Guardsmans I have currently into BR49 type clones, with custom leg extensions and home made spirit cups with heater shrouds.

    In my opinion I think the BR models look absolutely fantastic.
    They just seem to have a certain style about them.
