I'm hoping this may be of use to others who as in my case acquired a preheater with no shroud. Mine was on an IL47 with Railway provenance. I reckon this was a retro fit due to the age of the different designs, and maybe someone went round changing all the BR lamps to this design to avoid the spirit preheating.

Anyhow, I found that an Aladdin table lamp gallery plate was something like the right diameter, and just needed the outer perforated disc zizzing through with the Dremel, and a few(3mm) holes drilled round it to admit the air needed to burn cleanly.

My first attempt at a handle became unsoldered very quickly, so I resorted to some 1mm piano wire configured so it'd pass through the holes and a couple more I drilled in the skirted area at the bottom. Some super-steel epoxy holds the knob onto the bottom. Anyways, all is well, and all I need to complete this is the chimney collar, but the IL works Ok without. Yep, its pictured on a TL just for simplicity's sake.

Very cool. Well done. I wish I had your ability to think outside of the box.

My ancestors have been "cobbling" things up to suit the need for invention for many generations !
Legend has it, one of them, a Cordwainer, made some boots for Bonnie Prince Charlie when he arrived in Derby.
Just trying to keep the old ways alive.

I can recommend silbrazing (hard soldering) of components required to withstand priming cup heat.

Brazing is sadly not in my suite of skills. Finding something light in weight that would serve as a handle without unbalancing the shroud was causing me some concern. Anyhow this wire arrangement, though a trifle loose fit when pulled through seems perfect. If I ever do another I'd maybe try another ring of perforations above the second, but it gets harder to centre punch and drill up there due to the curved shape in the collar nearer to the top. Anyway, it's one less job waiting in the wings thanks to an abundance of pandemic derived "free time". !!

Good lord, I only just saw this thread. I made my own too, but mainly to sit in a Vapalux spirit cup as a mock up of a BR49 with custom extension legs and 169 vapouriser. However, I also have one with 2/3rds of an original preheater, that I made one for which works ok, but can smoke a little. I'll make one out of an Aladdin gallery plate and see how it fares. Many thanks! 20250311_093728.jpg 20250313_153351.jpg 20250402_121828.jpg Pics for reference from separate thread.

I managed this, but unfortunately the skirt around the base of the Aladdin burner plate was different to the OP's. Nevertheless, I adapted it thus and it does mate over the surface of the paraffin bowl, or just about: 20260309_143834.jpg 20260309_143949.jpg
