This is my take on a Tilley ML 98. I'm not sure what lamp this base was originally supplied with, it came with an Aladdin mantle lamp in it which I think is far too new for the base (NOS in box). It's a snug fit for the Tilley but it looks pretty good, if I do say so myself.

Yes that is an Aladdin lamp base. Last of those is Aladdin 12 I think but I am no expert on Aladdin stuff. They were designed for the centre draught lamps so the bottom cut outs run right through. The Tilley base is slightly different inside and the cut outs do not penetrate through. Looks good though. ::Neil::

Thanks Neil, I tried the height with both the 606 and 169 vapourisers but I couldn't get 15.5" as the book says so I new it wasn't an original, but it's nice to know where it came from.

Hello Matt, that is a very smart lamp!

The wooden base could do with a clean up and then be fed with wood oil, Jeff.

Thanks Jeff, I was thinking of restoring the base and having it refinished, but I have a plan, ;) ;) so I think i'm going to leave this as is. :D I'm not sure yet though. :D

Just for reference, here is an extract from a 1939 Aladdin catalogue showing the wooden stand.

This confused me for ages as it looked square in the first three pictures...

The average weekly wage back then was £3 14s.

These really would have been quite expensive items at the time. That base would have been the equivalent of around £60 today and the shade around £37.
