The original mantle for those was an (Asbestos woven ball too dangerous to use) now replaced with a wire mesh sphere an example of the same vintage as yours is here (1935-40 Tilley R1) the metal tube is to concentrate the pre-heat to the mantle and burner

30 AUD , that's about 15 quid UK.. I would call that a steal! It's come up a treat! love the copper reflector, perhaps if you got the wire guard cleaned and painted with VHT matt silver as i do with my wire handles may give it that extra touch?

All a matter of choice of course. If you want a new one I think they are on ebay

    look at this link:

I think you can get the wire mantle from Juliands on ebay uk also:

R1 Tilley Second edition.jpg 20190926_222624.jpg Here is the later R1 heater Lucky i bought it when i was 16, and gave it to my brother or sold it to him as i needed money at the time and forgot all about it , then i started collecting again and wanted to buy his Tilleys that he had, and he said yes, also i have your old heater you can have it back for free so its been in the family for 35+ years

I think it works well, but i didn't want to use the burner as i cleaned it up, it works just as well as this photo show but different burner

...Really?... Hum .. looks great from here, but you are next to it and perhaps can see more?

Was it painted when you got it? .. Some of the older ones were polished and lacquered.

Looks great Brian but just one thing, the little flap on the guard should sit at the bottom.

Surely not. The flap enables the draught shield to be used when preheating without having to remove the whole guard.

Yes, flap to the top so that the pre-heater wind shield can be placed and removed.

    @Buggerlugs

Your heater is looking great and working well.

    Now, a question or two:

Am I correct in assuming that the XN control cock is original to the heater?

When you look the control cock out to service is, did it have a “normal” system for operating the pricker or was there a ball bearing involved?

    Cheers

    Tony

    It's a fine looking heater!

Tilley introduced that style of wire guard in the 1950's, in my opinion, it is a better guard than the original simpler guard.

I decided that since I came across an original wire guard that I should put it on, as you said wrong period got me thinking. hmm
I did like the other guard, but better to have the original one.
