Some Tilley lamps have a registration number stamped on the rim. Do we know when this stamping started and finished? I have a Tilley TL10 with the registration stamp, and I'm trying to sort an approximate date. Any help appreciated. Cheers Tony
That designs registry number 681681 dates from about 1922-1923. These were valid for 7 years and renewable for a further 7 so in theory has legal validation to about 1936-7 and in that period it was stamped on the rim of TL10 lanterns. It may have been used beyond that date as stocks were used up. ::Neil::
I just looked this up so I can do better that what my memory did eartlier. From the UK public record office the designs registry number Rd 681681 stamped in the base rim of older type 2 tanks falls about a third of the way between 680283 Jan 11 1921 and 684586 Aug 12 1921, so this design dates from approximately March 1921. It was valid for 14 years so expired Early 1935. ::Neil::
@Mackburner Thanks, Neil. Only a few of the numbers are visible on the rim, but I will check them to make sure they are part of that series. That will assist in dating the lamp. A follow up question relates to the control cock - or more precisely, the depth of the area the control cock screws into in the fluted column. How deep would the space be if it was originally fitted with an XN control cock? (Mine has a GF control cock - I'm wondering whether it is original or not). Cheers Tony
@Mackburner The registration stamp has been mis-stamped (doubled), but clearly has "81" at the right hand side of the stamp. Thanks for that information, Neil. Cheers Tony
@Mackburner I've answered my own question by digging out an XN control cock I'd forgotten about: it does not fit. So I have the fluted column set up for the GF control cock on a Registry-stamped tank. Cheers Tony
Bears out what I have long suspected that Tilley continued to use these marked tanks long after the registration had expired. Could be they still had old stock to hand when they changed to the GF cock. The number was of course still correct but after 1935 it had no legal status. ::Neil::
Another variation of the incomplete registration stamping is here on an R1 heater: Tilley R1: what does this number mean? Cheers Tony
