Here is my Tilley X246 Pork Pie as received. I got the lantern from rural Victoria, Australia and looking at the condition of the box it has been sitting on a clay floor in a barn or shed for some time. The bottom of the box was impregnated in clay. I can’t decide if it is in original condition or if the fount has been repainted. There was corrosion and there is ware on the paint from usage and there was spilt paint (grey) over the gold in places. Also the hood is in excellent condition suggesting little use. So it might be original condition? All the existing seals (except the PIPS) were made of leather which had been coated in some type of thread seal. This made disassembling the lantern rather difficult. All the seals needed replacing and so did the vapouriser. Not much else I can say about it. The burner is stamped PAT 202485 The pump has been replaced with a later model pump. (So I’m on the lookout for a replacement) The box, operating instructions and assembly instructions came with the lantern. I,m sure I have a few spare pump assemblies here martin . Will let you know give me time to check . Bob
Thanks gentlemen for the kind words. I'm very happy with the find. @Lamp_Doctor Thanks Bob, much appreciated. I'll wait to hear from you.
@toad of the cape Thanks Alex, the globe logo is blue. DUROSIL TILLEY HENDON ENGLISH HEAT RESISTING GLASS
@ROBBO55 A very fine example of that style of X246. The tank looks like the original paint job to me, and it’s only nutters like us who would put a replacement Tilley transfer back on. The blue writing on the globe is a good find as well, and it appears to be the earlier “deep bottom” globe. A great find. Cheers Tony
@Tony Press Thanks Tony. The seals I replaced were a real bush repair of leather and thread seal so I realy can't see them bothering to buy a transfer. Yes it is a deep bottom globe
@ROBBO55 I’d be sticking that globe in a safe place and using a replacement... One of my “pork pies” came with the later pump, but I was lucky enough to fettle a later X246 for a friend and it had the pork pie pump, so we swapped. Cheers Tony
Tony, the lantern is on display in the house but it is easy to change the globe when I want to light it. Unfortunately Bob (Lamp-doctor) didn't have a spare pump in his shed so the search is on for a 'Pork Pie Pump'.
Very nice indeed, I do love these pok pie as they were made very well and very strong, looks like you got the mother load with this one. Excellent find and work well you should be over the moon, I know I would be.
Update. It's not clear in the original photos but mine came with the same insect screen as seen on Tilley X246 (NIB; circa 1946) posted by Tony Press. It sits inside the glass. The Centre hole is approx 11.6mm dia which is smaller than the later steel ones 12.5mm dia. Out side diameters are the same as are the perforation holes (4.5mm dia). In some of the previous photos a split clip on screen can be seen, this was used during the initial firing to simplify pre heating.
Ha! Thanks, Martin. So now we have identified the first varition of the post-WWII Tilley lower insect screen!!! Cheers Tony
