Gold painted X246A date marked 264XA. Found in quite good condition and ready to fettle. The gold paint has flaked off in some areas revealing a silver, possibly speculum finish below.

I've tried soap and water and more paint is coming away. I think it may all come off and see what the paint is concealing.

    I'll post more pictures soon.

It's concealing what's known as a plating failure. Speculum tanks which failed inspection were sent back down the line and painted to conceal the fault. Unfortunately, Tilley didn't feel the need to 'key' the surface of the plating so the paint usually flakes off as you've already found out...

Most of the paint came off by picking away with my finger nail. The remaing paint was defiant..... four applications of paint stripper showing how the paint quality was better back then......I’ve stipped a couple of X246b’s and I just had to show them the paint stripper for the paint to submit
Removing the paint showed up the plating flaws.... a couple of areas, smaller than a UK penny where there was no speculum.
The tank has been polished and lacquered. Pictures to follow once the frame has been painted.:content:

Patch that caused Tilley to send such a nice lamp back to the paint room

    Looks good. One small patch.
On the bright side, the paint protected the rest of the plating from deterioration over the years.
