ok as some may know I have been collecting lamps from a little old lady who is clearing out her shed. Well so far I have 11 complete Guardsman lamps.... not counted the others yet :-)

Should I reseal all of them or just reseal the ones I want to use 2 or 4 and leave the others all revamped just awaiting seals?

In short whats the best way to store lamps, with or with out seals ??

(How did I end up with sooo many?!?!?!?!?)

    Thanks Andy

Hello Andy, perhaps you could post some photographs which show what you have gathered so far.

That's a pretty nice collection you have there! If it was me I'd buy a large set of seals as it's cheaper and fettle them slowly, one by one.

Every now and then you see a whole box of Tilley globes going for a reasonable price... looks like you'll need them!

    Morning Rob,
I was only got to do the X246 Guardsman lamps and I know I have a couple BR lamps in there... but what are the different variations and how do I tell them apart?

Just looked and have 16 246b lamps as well. I'll probably have some fun with these if i make them into working lamps :-k:-k:-k

Thanks for the advice, cracking group this :D/:D/:D/
    Andy

G'day Andy, by variations I was referring to the colour of the hoods, whether the hoods have 1 lip or 2 , different pump types, different cocks etc.

Guardsman lanterns always had the brown hood except for the Speculum plated De-Lux which used the black hood. X246A early versions were brown hood and later ones black and all the B versions are black hoods. There were several variations in the pump types and mostly we can't date the changes very well so if they fit then they are likely to be near enough correct. ::Neil::

As to your question, it depends what you want to do with them. I would not be surprised if you decide to sell off or give away a good few of them, if not most. In that case, it does not really pay imo to invest the time and cost of materials unless you are going to find a real passion doing just that.
Personally I can enjoy a lamp that has not been put into a working condition (yet) so I limit new seals to the ones I want to see work. Mike

I have a fair collection of tilleys, buy the big tin from fettle box, fix them up, get them going, if you have anything special keep it, other than that give them away to friends and family , they will always treasure it for generations.
Sell the others at market just for fun and spread the lantern bug 20191003_081309.jpg
