    This one started as A Wenzel that had been smashed. Aida burner cage, and Butterfly glass. Bright bugger, and easy on fuel. The pump needs a cup spreader. I doont see them for sale.

    Any luck with the deer? All I got this year was covered with ticks.

    If you bought a piece of spring steel sheet from Amazon for $20 (3"x50")you could make them pretty easy.

    Example seen here from page posted above.

    Why do you need a cup spreader ?
    A good cup is a good cup.
    Only bad leather cups need a spreader.

    Yes sir, This was a new unused pump cup. I am not familiar with what a 'Good' cup is supposed to be. It sure looked good to me, but didn't pump very well, and I have seen this reported on many of these clones of the original Petromax design. That there is a pump cup spreader available seems to attest to this. It could be inferior cups. I used the original unfired cup, and soaked it in oil, and inverted it over night.

    @dwillie ,

    Was it too stiff (hard to pump), or too loose (didn't hold pressure well)?

    Loose. It misses a beat now and again, and takes many pumps when like that. I am sure its an inferior cup. It runs great.

    Depending on the state it is in: use some vaseline (?) or non aggressive thin oil, like they offer for sewing machines.
    Make the leather cup smooth again and make it a little wider.
    This is one part.
    The second one more important is a good valve, the spring should must work perfectly. Right combination gives a smooth pump movement and the valve which says ppprrrfft.

    Off coarse with an almost empty tank you have to work somewhat longer.
    With a full tank you have to pump more often.
