FC9D7092-0348-4DBD-A13F-92B248D2FC43.jpeg New member here, found this Optimus 930 in a 2nd hand shop in a small town in South Africa called Port Alfred. Needed a new jet and cleaning needle which took a while to get to me. Fitted today and all working well, although the entire lamp/body gets quite hot (seems a reported feature of this model).

Glass is makes Scott West Germany, and it had a label on the base marked “made by Optimus Zimbabwe”, with what appears to be a date (‘92). Most likely only assembled there, but interesting bit of history and I wonder if it was a Swedish African development initiative?

Runs super quietly and gives good light with consistent pressure for hours.

    Cheers, Max

Welcome to the forum. These Zimbabwe 930s are an interesting off shoot from the main branch. It's nice to see the original box, even though it has seen better days. I think you should take some more photos to show some of the details.

Welcome aboard! Nice "starter" lantern. You won't be able to stop at one! Yes, they do run hot... Haven't seen one yet that didn't.

Thanks Walkop. The build quality is good, mostly brass. I had to order a new jet and cleaning needle. The thread on the new jet was a little shorter and the "crest" on the thread not as wide, so had a small leak on the join that I had to fix. As I'm not an expert in these lamps, I decided to use copper grease which resists high heat, which sealed the leak. I was initially worried when the lamp and tank body heated up a lot more than the couple of Colemans I have, but reading the various threads in the forum, this seems a characteristic. I can only presume that the heat from the lower part of the vapourizer tube transfers directly to the paraffin in the tank?
As reported by Tony in another thread, Optimus Zimbabwe was formed in 1982 as a joint venture with the Swedish Government through its “Swedfund”, following independence as Zimbabwe in 1980. Not known when they closed (my lamp is 1992). The site is now used for freight and garment manufacture. I need to register on the CCS forum as there's more info about the factory there.
